Filming underway in Dublin on Irish-set adaptation of Mid-August Lunch; Fionnula Flanagan and James McArdle to star
03 May 2022 : Nathan Griffin
Principal photography is underway on Four Mothers, an Irish-set adaptation of Gianni di Gregorio’s 2008 box office hit film Mid-August Lunch (Pranzo Di Ferragosto).

Legendary Irish actor Fionnula Flanagan and Olivier Award nominee James McArdle will lead the cast with Dearbhla Molloy (Wild Mountain Thyme), Paddy Glynn (Cinderella) and Stella McCusker (Nowhere Special) also starring.

IFTA winner Darren Thornton will direct a script co-written with his brother, Colin Thornton. The pair came to prominence following their debut film A Date For Mad Mary, which claimed the Best Film award at the 2017 IFTA Film & Drama Awards.

The comedy adaptation heralds from producer Eric Abraham (Ida) and Jack Sidey’s Portobello Films and Television (Moffie) with Irish producer Martina Niland (Sing Street) producing for Port Pictures.

McArdle plays a self-sabotaging novelist, saddled with caring for his mother (Flanagan) after a stroke. After his book becomes an overnight hit, his plans for a U.S. promotional tour are thrown into disarray when three more elderly women (played by Molloy, Glynn and McCusker) are deposited on his doorstep.

Four Mothers is funded by Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland, The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland, RTÉ, Section 481, Portobello Films and Television, and The Common Humanity Arts Trust.

In 2008, the original low-budget Italian indie Mid-August Lunch became a critical and commercial hit, premiering at a number of major festivals including La Biennale di Venezia, Berlinale, Palm Springs, London, and Karlovy Vary, and earning almost €10 million at the box office.
