The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has announced the nominees for the 79th Annual Golden Globe Awards from the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.

Kenneth Branagh’s Northern Irish semi-autobiographical drama Belfast emerged as the frontrunner, leading the way in relation to this year’s films with seven nominations.

A poignant story of love, laughter and loss in one boy’s childhood, amid the social and political tumult of the late 1960s, Belfast stars Caitríona Balfe, Judi Dench, Jamie Dornan, Ciarán Hinds, and introduces 10-year-old Jude Hill.

The film received nominations including: Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture – Catriona Balfe; Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture – Jamie Dornan and Ciarán Hinds; Best Director – Motion Picture – Kenneth Branagh; Best Screenplay – Motion Picture – Kenneth Branagh; and Best Original Song – Motion Picture – Down to Joy, Van Morrison

Ruth Negga was also recognised for her impressive performance in Passing. The Irish actress is nominated alongside Balfe in the Actress in a Supporting Role category, where they will face competition from Ariana Debose (West Side Story), Kristen Dunst (The Power of the Dog), and Aunjanue Ellis (King Richard).

Jamie Dornan and co-star Ciaran Hinds will also face stiff competition in the Best Supporting Actor with Ben Affleck (The Tender Bar), Troy Kotsur (Coda), and Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Power of the Dog) receiving nominations in the same category.

Oscar and IFTA winning Irish director Benjamin Cleary missed out on recognition in the Best Motion Picture or Director categories for his Apple Original Film, Swan Song. However, two time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali picked up a nomination for his performance in Cleary’s film. Read Benjamin Cleary and Mahershala Ali discussing Swan Song.

This year’s Golden Globes marked the first occasion where submissions were not required for award consideration. However, the HFPA accommodated filmmakers/studios who requested their content to be considered only for specific categories.

HFPA have also stated that they have completely overhauled its bylaws over the last eight months. The Organisation believes these changes will implement sweeping changes from top to bottom that address ethics and code of conduct, diversity, equity and inclusion, governance, membership, and more.

Recently, the HFPA also admitted their largest and most diverse class to date of 21 new members, all of whom are first-time Golden Globe voters.

The winners will be announced on Sunday, January 9th, 2022.
