New Irish Documentary 'Losing Alaska' to Receive International Premiere at IDFA
24 Oct 2018 : Nathan Griffin
Tom Burke’s new documentary ‘Losing Alaska’ has been selected to receive its International Premiere at the 2018 International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA).

Produced by Alan Maher and Jessie Fisk for Marcie Films, ‘Losing Alaska’ will  screen as part of the Frontlight strand of this year’s festival.

IDFA is the world’s leading documentary festival and prides itself on presenting work that stimulates and offers new perspectives, as well as championing documentaries that combine stylistic innovation with urgent content. This year’s edition will run from 14 – 25th November.

Losing Alaska’ tells the story of the people of Newtok, some three hundred and seventy five American citizens whose homes are disappearing. As winter storms grow fiercer each year and steal more of the coastline, summer meltwaters surge down the Ninglick River and erode the edges of the town. Rising temperatures are melting the permafrost on which the town is built.

The documentary follows their efforts build a new town on safer ground before the inevitable flood washes their homes away and celebrates the commitment it takes to make that journey, while also questioning what is being lost in the process.

Losing Alaska’ is directed by Tom Burke and produced by Alan Maher and Jessie Fisk for Marcie Films and was supported by Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland. Sound Design was done by Steve Fanagan, music by Gerry Horan and world sales are being handled by Taskovski Films.

This year’s edition of IDFA, which marks the festival’s 31st year, will also screen new Irish short film ‘Memory Room’, which is directed by Feargal Ward & Adrian Duncan, and stars Barry Ward. The short film is produced by Feargal, who directed the award-winning ‘The Lonely Battle of Thomas Reid’, which received its World Premiere at IDFA last year and is currently screening in Irish cinemas nationwide.
