Ben Wheatley’s crime thriller premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last weekend and received the People’s Choice Award in the Midnight Madness stream.
Wheatley directs a screenplay which he co-wrote with Amy Jump, with the pair having previously collaborated on ‘High-Rise’.
Patrick Bergin (Age of Kill), Michael Smiley (My Name is Emily) and Brie Larson (Room) also feature in the stellar cast, led by Murphy in the gangland world of 1970s Boston. IFTA-nominated Production Designer Paki Smith (Viva)is also attached.
Andy Starke of Rook films produced, with executive producers including Martin Scorsese (Wolf of Wall Street) and Emma TIllinger Koskoff (Bleed For This).
TIFF 2016 marked the international premiere of the project, with its European debut set for the upcoming BFI London Film Festival, which runs from October 5th-16th.
Previous Irish wins at the festival include Irish feature ‘Room’ (Lenny Abrahamson) which received a People’s Choice Award at TIFF 2015.
‘Free Fire’ is set to release to cinemas in Ireland and the UK in March 2017.
