‘Penny Dreadful’ has ended
Victorian horror series ‘Penny Dreadful’, which was completely shot in Ireland, has come to an end after three seasons.

The series came to a natural conclusion which was shrouded in secrecy with fans only becoming aware that the shocker season three finale had concluded when the words ‘The End’ came up before the closing credits. The series starred Eva Green, Timothy Dalton and Josh Hartnett and followed the lives of explorer Sir Malcolm Murray, American gunslinger Ethan Chandler, scientist Victor Frankenstein and medium Vanessa Ives whose lives unite to combat supernatural threats in Victorian London.

Co-produced in Ireland by Octagon Films, all three seasons were shot in Dublin and Wicklow, particularly in Ardmore Studios outside Bray. The acclaimed third season began shooting in August 2015 for 24 weeks.

Key Irish creative roles on the series include cinematographers Owen McPolin and John Conroy, set decorator Philip Murphy (who won a BAFTA for his work on the show), master painter Neville Gaynor, prop master David Flanagan, construction manager Nicky MacManus and locations managers Maria O’Connor and Colm Nolan. Irish directors Dearbhla Walsh and Brian Kirk received IFTA nominations for their work on the series.

The series was also nominated for three IFTA Awards earlier this year for Best Drama and Best Director Drama (Brian Kirk) with Sarah Greene winning for Best Supporting Actress Drama. The show also received three Primetime Emmy nominations and one Golden Globe nomination (for Eva Green’s lead performance) over the three year run.

In 2014, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht Heather Humphreys stated that the first season alone of ‘Penny Dreadful’ was worth €33m to the Irish economy.

‘Penny Dreadful’ was created, written and executive produced by Oscar nominee John Logan (‘Hugo’, ‘The Aviator’, ‘Gladiator’) and executive produced by Logan’s Desert Wolf Productions, along with Oscar winner Sam Mendes (‘American Beauty’, ‘Skyfall’) and Pippa Harris (‘Revolutionary Road’), both from Neal Street Productions.
