Guth Gafa calls for Irish Feature Documentaries and announces new 'Made in Louth/Meath' strand

The Guth Gafa International Documentary Film Festival is asking Irish filmmakers to submit their feature documentaries for consideration for their 9th festival which will take place in Kells, County Meath from October 2nd to 4th 2015.

Over the past eight years, Guth Gafa has screened many multi-award winning Irish documentaries, such as ‘His and Hers’, ‘Colony’ and ‘The Pipe’, amongst others. Last year, they screened ‘Blood Fruit’, ‘Dreams of a Clown’, ‘La Violencia’ and ‘The Stranger’.

The best Irish feature documentaries submitted this year will be screened alongside their international films, and the call for all Irish filmmakers to submit feature documentaries is open from now until midnight Friday August 22nd. Guth Gafa is now recognized on the international circuit as a critically lauded documentary festival with much interest garnered for their program every year.

Guth Gafa will accept any Irish feature documentaries on any human rights, social action and environmental issue subjects, completed since January 2014 and that have not yet been broadcast. Irish feature documentaries that have premiered at other festivals will also be considered. Submission is completely free and online and the submission form can be accessed at this link - https://goo.gl/yvdVvn.

Five Irish shorts to screen at the Encounters Short Film and Animation Festival in the UK

Irish short films ‘Deadly’, ‘Somewhere Down the Line’, ‘Sophie at the Races’, ‘Dreaming of Peggy Lee’ and ‘Snowfall’ will screen in competition at the Encounters Short Film and Animation Festival - the UK’s leading short film and animation festival.

‘Deadly, funded under the Irish Film Board’s Frameworks scheme, was directed by Aidan McAteer and produced by Shannon George of Kavaleer Productions. It tells the story of Boney, a working stiff in a dead-end job. That is until he has a run-in with a spirited old lady named Bridie. The short has won awards including Best Short at the Irish Animation Awards and features the voices of Peter Coonan and Brenda Fricker.

IFTA Award winner ‘Somewhere Down the Line’ (funded by the IFB) was also the winner of the Best Animation award in the International Competition at the Clermont Ferrand Short Film Festival in February. It was directed by Julien Regnard and examines a man's life, loves and losses which are shown through the exchanges he has with the passengers in his car. The short was produced by Jonathan Clarke for Cartoon Saloon, based in Kilkenny.

In ‘Sophie at the Races’, we join Sophie as she journeys to the races on a promise from her troubled mother Hariette that she will meet her father for the first time. Written and directed by Alan Friel, this IFB Signatures drama was produced by Fiona Kinsella for Jumper Productions and has played at a variety of international film festivals since its debut.

‘Dreaming of Peggy Lee’ is about two deaf children who escape their oppressive care home to sneak into a 1940's jazz club in London. The short was written, directed and produced by James Everett.

‘Snowfall’ is about an anxious young man who has a moving experience at a friend's house party – an experience of fleeting love, mixed emotions and human interactions. The animation, which is almost five minutes long, is produced and directed by Conor Whelan.

The 21st Encounters Short Film Festival takes place in Bristol, England from September 15 to 20.

10th anniversary of ‘Breakfast on Pluto’ is celebrated at this year’s GAZE International LGBT Film Festival

The 23rd GAZE International LGBT Film Festival takes place in Dublin from July 30th to August 3rd and the festival this year includes a tenth anniversary screening of ‘Breakfast on Pluto’ at the Lighthouse Cinema on Sunday 2nd August. The Irish Film Board-funded short film Céad Ghrá will also screen at the festival.

Directed by Neil Jordan (‘Michael Collins’, ‘Interview with the Vampire’), ‘Breakfast on Pluto’ follows a young trans woman, Patrick “Kitten” Braden (Cillian Murphy), who comes of age and leaves her small Irish town for 1970s London, hoping to find love and acceptance – and her birth mother.

In addition to Murphy, ‘Breakfast on Pluto’ showcases a who’s who of Irish talent including Liam Neeson, Ruth Negga, Brendan Gleeson, Liam Cunningham, Stephen Rea and Eva Birthistle. The film was based on the novel by Patrick McCabe (The Butcher Boy).

The committee of GAZE said of Breakfast on Pluto: “Neil Jordan’s all-star cast (including Brendan Gleeson, Liam Neeson and Stephen Rea, to name but a few) and career-defining performance from Murphy make this film as uplifting and memorable now as it was when it was released, pushing boundaries and opening minds with a rare portrayal of an Irish trans character and heroine. Not just a nostalgic thrill, but a groundbreaking and award-winning moment in Irish cinema.”

In addition, short film ‘Céad Ghrá’ will screen as part of a program of Irish shorts on Sunday, August 2nd. Directed by Brian Deane, ‘Céad Ghrá’ follows two best-friends who set off on a quest in pursuit of their first crush. ‘Céad Ghrá’ recently screened at Starbucks coffeehouses across North America as part of the Seattle International Film Festival.
