‘Lá Dár Saol’ Airs Friday 31st October on TG4
15 Oct 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
Lá Dár Saol, a Northern Ireland Screen Irish language broadcast funded production airs Friday 31st October at 5pm on TG4.

This Halloween, the Irish language channel TG4 celebrates its 18th birthday. The day will be marked by the launch of landmark documentary ‘Lá Dár Saol’, which shows modern Ireland, north and south, through the eyes (and cameras) of young people.

500 young Irish speakers (15-21) were recruited from schools and colleges all over Ireland. After training in film making, they were sent out to shoot their world on the 1st November 2013 on their own tablets, digital cameras and mobile phones.

‘Lá Dár Saol’ covers a variety of issues and activities, including love, loneliness, emigration, exams, drugs, sport, music and pop culture. The project gives an authentic insight into Ireland’s young people and shows their perspectives on modern life, and all through the medium of Irish.

Each participant completed a day-long workshop which focused on health and safety, editorial values and technical advice. The filming for the programme took place over a 24 hour period beginning at midnight on Halloween Night 2013 - the start of the Celtic New Year and a time of festivals and celebrations. Events filmed include: Oireachtas na Gaeilge; GAA and other sporting activities; concerts; holidays; sleepovers; parties; music and more.

The ‘Lá Dár Saol’ films were uploaded by the participants to a central website and the best material was edited into content for TV and the web, which includes the landmark documentary to be broadcast exactly one year later on Halloween night 2014. Additional content will be available to watch and vote on. It can be accessed via the TG4 website and youtube channel. Some of this content will also be shown as 90- second shorts on TG4, giving authentic and entertaining insights into the world and attitudes of young people.

Producer Antaine Ó Donnaile said he is delighted with the results of the project: “‘Lá Dár Saol’ has empowered young Irish speakers with media skills and awareness. They themselves have been able to author and influence TG4‘s output. I am delighted to have had a part in this important project which is promoting active citizenship and media engagement.”

The second phase of the project has been commissioned and filming will take place on St Patrick’s Day next year. Macha Media are already on the hunt for future participants. If you would like to be part of next year’s filming, or if you would like to find out more about the project, you can contact Antaine at info@machamedia.net.

‘Lá Dár Saol’ is a Macha Media production for TG4 made with support from Northern Ireland Screen’s Irish Language Broadcast Fund and the BAI’s Sound and Vision II Scheme.
