Ka-Boom Post Productions On The Rise
22 Apr 2014 : Aisling Newton
Ka-boom post-productions opened its doors in 2010 and in the space of four years have secured contracts with some of the most high profile film and TV productions in Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland’s newest post-production facility has provided services to various productions including ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘The Fall’ and ‘Peaky Blinders’ among many others. Ka-boom began with audio post-production but quickly moved onto providing full post-production with picture, offline, online and grading. The team at Ka-boom is headed up by co-owners Zach Willis and Will McConnell, who has been working in the Northern Ireland industry for the past 10-15 years as a dubbing engineer. Speaking about Ka-boom’s expansion, Willis said: “The Northern Ireland film industry has been a rapidly growing hive in the last two to three years. Ka-boom was established in the midst of a recession but also at a prominent time as we grew and expanded with the industry. In the beginning we thought we would just be working on small productions and developing the business over five years but within the first 12 months we had moved out of the building and built a new studio to deal with the workload coming from Game Of Thrones. We had big international productions coming through the door which we didn’t anticipate three years down the line.”

Based in Belfast city centre, Ka-boom specialises in picture and sound post production for film, television, also providing services for radio and new media based platforms such as web and computer gaming. The facility provides full AVID cutting rooms supporting Standard Definition & High Definition projects alongside a 5.1 dubbing theatre with Avid Pro Tools 10 HDX system. Audio editing rooms are also available for dialogue editing and sound design. The facility is also connected to a 10GB fibre network allowing clients to transfer files to and from the facility in record speed. As Northern Ireland’s largest ADR stage, Ka-boom has facilitated many artists working around Belfast such as actors Jamie Lannister and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau for the film ‘Mama’, Kit Harington in ‘Pompeii’ and Com Meaney in ‘Alleged’. Audio for George Clooney’s ‘The Monuments Men’ and ‘Dracula’ was also recorded at Ka-boom.

Due to the influx of high profile work from major TV and film productions, Ka-boom are now able to compete with post-production facilities on a global scale. Without relying on big marketing campaigns, the company is expanding its client list on a word of mouth basis and are fast becoming well known in many circles. Willis said: “We have worked on a number of major productions now so our credibility really speaks for itself. A lot of our work comes from artists talking on set and knowing that if they need to do some work they can rely on Ka-boom’s services.”

Ka-boom covers a wide range of genres and provides post-production on radio advertisements and documentaries as well as film and TV. They are currently working on audio post deliveries for ‘Shooting for Socrates’, a new movie about the heady days of Mexico in 1986 when Northern Ireland met the mighty Brazil in the World Cup finals. Situated beside BBC Northern Ireland, Ka-boom also provides post-production on a number of BBC Panorama and current affair programmes. Last year they worked on a national ten-part series for BBC1 called ‘Real Lives Reunited’.

Ka-boom’s future looks bright as the company has major plans to continue growing the picture side of the business and add more on editing suites. “We have a number of other productions and films we will be working on later in the year so right now expanding and growing our business is our top priority. Over the next 12 - 24 months we will be looking to hire additional staff including picture editors, graders, sound designers etc. However, building up the facility to cater for the volume of work coming our way is essential at the moment.”
