‘Moone Boy’ to be Adapted for Big Screen
07 Apr 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
Nick Vincent Murphy, writer of the ‘Moone Boy’ series alongside Chris O’ Dowd, has confirmed the rumours that the hit comedy series will be adapted for a feature film. The hit series has won a number of Emmy and IFTA awards, including Best Entertainment Series and Best Director, Television for Ian Fitzgibbon at last week’s IFTAs.

The show stars O’Dowd, David Rawle, Deirdre O’Kane and Peter McDonald. It is directed by Declan Lowney and Fitzgibbon, and produced by Ted Dowd. The second series recently wrapped transmission on Sky and is now available on DVD.

Murphy has stated, “There are rumours of a film – isn’t it exciting? I can confirm that. We feel that we want to end it in a big way and we are not sure how we want to do that. The boys are growing up so it’s a series with a short shelf-life. So you can’t have an imaginary friend forever, so this story is going to end and we’re figuring out how to end it.”

Actress Deirdre O’Kane, nominated at the recent IFTAs for her role as Martin Moone’s mother, said, “It’s all down to Chris and Nick and if they want to do it, it would be fun.”

‘Moone Boy’ is a comedy series based on a twelve year-old boy (Rawle) with an imaginary friend (O’Dowd). Set in the late 80s to 90s, much of the show is based on O’Dowd’s own experiences of growing up in Ireland.

The series is a co-production between Sprout Pictures, Baby Cow Productions, Hod Cod Productions and Grand Pictures, the latter company of which is currently in post-production on the show’s third series. ‘Moone Boy’ was filmed on location in Boyle and elsewhere in Roscommon, as well as in Wicklow. Animated sequences were created by Cartoon Saloon.
