‘Soulboy’ Becomes New Enfant Terrible
29 Nov 2010 :
Soulboy
Shimmy Marcus’ Northern soul feature film, ‘Soulboy’ claimed the Best Film award in the Enfants Terribles section of the 48th Gijon International Film Festival in Spain. Irish director Shimmy Marcus (Headrush) was present at the event to receive the award.

Directed by Shimmy Marcus ‘Soulboy’ was shot in August 2008 and is set in 1974 against the backdrop of the Northern Soul movement. It stars Martin Compston (Sweet Sixteen), alongside Nichola Burley (Street Dance 3D), Felicity Jones (Cemetary Junction), Pat Shortt (Garage), Alfie Allen (Atonement) and Craig Parkinson (Control). The feature won in the Enfants Terribles section of the Spanish festival which looks to celebrate the best children´s and teen cinema of the moment - all of which should contain a moral.

Following two sold out screenings to 1,000 and 750 people respectively at the Spanish festival, ‘Soulboy’ also collected a cash prize towards distribution of the film in Spain. The film’s performance in recent weeks has given director Shimmy Marcus a very positive outlook on its future: "Every festival screening I´ve attended has been a sell out with additional screenings being added due to demand,”he tells IFTN. ”And with recent sales to Germany and Australia, the future looks very bright for the film."

'Soul Boy' recently came second in the Audience Award for Best Feature after its premiere at the Edinburgh Film Festival, a near-win that Shimmy has new opinions on: "This more than makes up for coming second at Edinburgh,”he tells us. ”And it’s fantastic to see how well audiences around the world are responding to the film."

In other festival news, ‘Soulboy’ was recently chosen as one of six films to represent the best of British cinema at the Dinard Festival in France along with films such as ´Mr. Nice´, and ´Made In Dagenham´. The film will also play at the Torino Film Festival in Italy this week.

The Spanish festival ran from the 19th to the 27th of November. For a full list of winners at the Gijon International Film Festival visit www.gijonfilmfestival.com
