Gabriel Byrne will begin principal photography on BBC crime thriller ‘Quirke’ in Clancy Barracks in Dublin on November 19, IFTN can exclusively reveal.

The three-part series is currently in pre-production, with production crew moving in their lighting equipment and trailers for the three month-long shoot.

Byrne, who is currently shooting his final scenes for the History Channel mini-series ‘Vikings’ in Wicklow, will be joined by ‘Sense & Sensibility’ director John Alexander in Dublin, as well as crew from Dublin-based Tyrone Productions and Element Pictures, and the BBC Drama team, who are all co-producing.

Clancy Barracks, situated beside Heuston Station in Island Bridge, was recently home to another Element and BBC co-production, ‘Ripper Street’, which wrapped filming there last July.

‘Ripper Street’s’ estimated €8m set, which was designed by IFTA-winner Mark Geraghty, was recently dismantled after an 18 week-long shoot to make room for the ‘Quirke’ set.

In 1950s-set ‘Quirke’, Byrne will play the John Banville-created Dublin city morgue pathologist of the same name. Irish writer Conor McPherson has adapted Banville’s books for the screen with ‘Little Dorrit’ writer Andrew Davies.

Each episode will see Byrne’s character delve deeper into the deaths of those who end up in his morgue, by mixing with the great and good of Dublin in his search for answers. Meanwhile, the pathologist uncovers the layers of his own tangled family history as he attempts to make amends with his estranged daughter.

The €9m Irish Film Board-funded series will shoot on the authentic cobbles and houses of Clancy Barracks as they serve as the backdrop of Dublin city. Locations manager Edmund Sampson assisted with the Dublin-based locations.

Additional Irish cast and crew are expected to be announced closer to the shoot date. Executive producers on ‘Quirke’ are Jessica Pope (BBC), Ed Guiney (Element) and Joan Egan (Tyrone Productions).

Thousands of extras are currently being sought for 'Quirke', with an open casting day for adults taking place on Tuesday November 6, between 11am-7pm at The Mont Clare (O'Callaghan's Hotel), 1/4 Merrion Street Lower, Dublin 2. Each person will be given a form to fill out and the production company will take your photo. All shapes and sizes of adults are welcome. Any further queries can be made by emailing quirkeextras@gmail.com.
