Daily Bite: FreemantleMedia Launches Drama Division
25 May 2012 : By Steve Cummins
Paul Marquess will head up Newman Street
In today’s Daily Bite, Páthe International seals more than 100 deals at Cannes; FreemantleMedia launches drama division and the trailer for director Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of ‘The Great Gatsby’.

FremantleMedia launches new drama division… FremantleMedia UK has launched a new drama division entitled Newman Street, reports C21 Media. As its first commission it will now produce the series ‘True Crime’ for ITV1. The production company will be headed by MD Paul Marquess, who was previously a series producer on Hollyoaks.

Páthe closes nearly 100 deals at Cannes... Páthe International, the sales arm of the leading European studio, has closed 100 deals at Cannes, reports Variety. Among its big sales are psychological thriller ‘An Enemy,’ from Canadian director Denis Villeneuve and Christophe Gans' €33m version of ‘The Beauty and the Beast,’ with Vincent Cassel, Lea Seydoux and Gerard Depardieu.

BSkyB bid link puts British culture secretary’s position at risk… There is fresh pressure on British culture secretary Jeremy Hunt in relation to new revelations about his support for News Corporation's bid to own British broadcaster BSkyB outright. Yesterday, at the Leveson inquiry in London it emerged that Hunt wrote privately to the British Prime Minister David Cameron urging him to back the BSkyB bid saying that the UK ''media sector will suffer for years'' if the bid was blocked.

If you watch one trailer today… Here’s the first look at director Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of ‘The Great Gatsby,’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio. It will be released in Ireland this Christmas.
