‘Zig and Zag: The Animated Series’ Eyes Summer Production Start
01 May 2012 : By Steve Cummins
Zig and Zag: The Animated Series
‘Zig and Zag: The Animated Series’ is set to go into production this summer with a planned transmission date on CBBC and RTÉ for next year. Dublin’s Double Z Productions and Co Down animation company Flickerpix are currently finalising the financing of the 2D animated television series, which will mark the return of the famous 1990s puppet duo who first appeared on RTÉ’s ‘Dempsey’s Den’ before a successful stint on ‘The Big Breakfast’ on Channel 4.

The series will comprise of at least 26 episodes. Each episode will last 11-minutes and the series producers envisage that six to 12-year-old children will make up its core audience.

Both CBBC and RTÉ are helping to fund the project alongside Northern Ireland Screen and the Irish Film Board. The IFB awarded Double Z Productions a production loan of €150,000 in their last round of funding last month.

Double Z Productions and Flickerpix are now currently talking to distributors with production on the show hopefully set to get underway in the coming weeks.

The TV series will follow twin alien brothers Zig and Zag who, after years of enjoying the finest trash-TV earth had to offer, decide to return to Planet Zog. However, after a disastrous space road trip, they crash land in the middle of humdrum suburbia. The lovable duo wreaks havoc in the suburbs with insane inventions, death defying stunts, invisible cats and robot supermodels.

The series is once again written by Zig and Zag creators Ciaran Morrison and Mick O’Hara who will also voice the characters. The series will be produced by Ronan McCabe for Double Z and David Cumming for Flickerpix. Joel Simon (Macropolis), creative director at Flickerpix, will direct the series.
