20 Dec 2021 : Nathan Griffin
Nothing To Declare
The award-winning short documentary Nothing to Declare has been acquired by The New Yorker Studios.

The film charts the fascinating adventure of two Irish boys, Keith Byrne and Noel Murray, who were infamous stowaways to New York in 1985.

Directed by Garret Daly and produced by Martina McGlynn, The New Yorker Studios will release the film in the US and Canada in January as part of the award-winning New Yorker Documentary series available on the brands digital platforms. The series showcases innovative short films from around the world.

“We are just thrilled,” director Garret Daly told IFTN. “This provides such a wonderful platform for audiences in North America to engage with the film. The New Yorker is such an iconic brand, and this is a perfect fit for a beloved Irish story.”

Nothing to Declare debuted in July at the Galway Film Fleadh, where it won the Academy Award-qualifying Best Short Documentary Award. The international premiere was held in November at DOC NYC where it was also selected for the prestigious shortlist shorts showcase.

The film has also been officially selected for an Australian premiere in competition at the prestigious 31st Flickerfest International Short Film Festival in Sydney. It will screen in the Best of Documentary Shorts category on Sunday, January 23rd at 6.30pm, in the unique setting of an Open-air cinema at Bondi Beach Sydney.

Nothing to Declare tells the story of two Dublin boys (aged 10 & 13) travelled as stowaways all the way to New York in an effort to meet their hero, B.A. Baracus of the A-Team. In August 1985, they began an incredible trip in which they left home and eventually ended up in New York via an Air India flight from London. Their journey baffled security in three countries, caused a major terrorism alert, and left their parents in the dark about their whereabouts for days.

In addition to playing Galway and DOC NYC, Nothing to Declare won the Audience Award at the Irish Film Institutes Documentary Festival. It also won Best Documentary and the Audience Award at the Clones Film Festival and Best Documentary at the Louth Film Festival. Other festival screenings include the Cork Film Festival and Kerry Film Festival.

Nothing To Declare was shot and edited by Daly and produced by McGlynn. Additional camera work was done in the USA by Sam Schnorr and Thomas Rowley. Executive Producers included Eamonn Fitzgerald, Gerry Burke and Ryan Suffern of the Kennedy Marshall Company. Killian Fitzgerald of Avatar Post handled the sound mixing.
