Nika McGuigan’s final film Wildfire, received its Irish premiere in her hometown of Clones, Co Monaghan in the Barry McGuigan Park at 6pm Sunday evening August 29th. The premiere was hosted by Clones Film Festival and presented by Wildcard Distribution to a sellout crowd at the outdoor event.

'Wildfire' was written by Newry-born filmmaker Cathy Brady, who also makes her directorial debut with the drama. McGuigan, who also previously starred in Brady’s Can’t Cope Won’t Cope RTE series, stars alongside Nora-Jane Noone (The Descent; Brooklyn) with the pair delivering intense and brilliant performances as sisters in Wildfire.

Nika McGuigan tragically passed away two years ago following a short illness and posthumously received the 2021 Irish Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in Film for her performance in the film.

Before the screening, Nika’s IFTA Award was presented to her parents Barry and Sandra McGuigan by founder and Chief Executive of the Irish Film and Television Academy, Áine Moriarty.

Nika’s father Barry said the event was a great comfort to his family in Nika’s absence, and that the film was a fitting tribute to her legacy and exceptional talent.

"Our hearts are broken that Nika is not here to see the success of her last performance, but my family and I are comforted to see it on the big screen with our friends, family and the community in Clones,”

When presenting the Award to Nika’s family, Áine Moriarty said … “Nika’s Legacy and her outstanding craft and talent will be a great source of inspiration for generations of young Irish actors into the future”

Filmed on location in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, Wildfire tells the story of a missing woman who returns home, igniting an intense bond with her sister. United they unearth their mother’s past but the truth has devastating consequences. The legacies of the past are political as well as personal on the Irish border and they soon find themselves on a collision course with everyone around them.

Wildfire is produced by David Collins for Samson Films, Charles Steel for Cowboy Films and Carlo Cresta-Dina for Tempesta Film. An Irish-UK co-production, Wildfire is supported by the BFI, Screen Ireland, Northern Ireland Screen and the Wellcome Trust.

Wildfire will go on general release in cinemas in Ireland and the UK on September 3rd and is distributed by Wildcard Distribution.
