Virgin Media Discovers Short Film Competition
The deadline is fast approaching for the Virgin Media Discovers short film competition, which was unveiled last month by Virgin Media, in association with Screen Ireland, and is worth a €150,000 prize fund.

The focus of the competition is to promote and support new and established Irish film making talent and development, with a focus on diversity and inclusion.

This year, the total prize fund is worth €150,000 and will be shared among 10 shortlisted projects. All of the funded projects will then receive high-quality exposure at the 2021 Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival and two overall winners will receive €30,000 each and production assistance to create their films. These will then be broadcast nationally on Virgin Media Television and at a special premiere event during the New Year. The competition is open to new, emerging talent, and also to established industry talent with a diverse story to tell.

This year, the judging panel includes award-winning director and screenwriter Lenny Abrahamson, known for directing such acclaimed independent films as Adam & Paul, Garage, What Richard Did, and Room; Derry Girls creator and screenwriter of The Deceived, Lisa McGee; Mullingar-born actor Niamh Algar who stars in Ridley Scott’s major new HBO Max series, Raised by Wolves; Screenwriter and Executive Producer Ursula Rani Sarma whose work includes Delicious and Red Rock, joined by representatives from Virgin Media Television, Screen Ireland, and the Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival.

This is the second year Virgin Media has run its competition to look for fresh and fearless filmmakers in Ireland, in association with the Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival. Last year’s winner was Innocent Boy, created by Cluster-Fox Films, co-owned by actor John Connors and Tiernan Williams, telling the story of a deaf Traveller boy.  They won the overall prize, premiered as part of the Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival, and was broadcast nationally on Virgin Media Television and on Virgin Media On Demand.

The Virgin Media Discovers Short Film Competition is open to all aspiring filmmakers, whether it’s your first time or it propels you onto a national platform. Deadline for submissions is midnight 30th November 2020.
