IFTA Film & Drama Awards Focus: Best Animation #IFTA17
04 Apr 2017 : Katie McNeice
'Second to None'
With the 2017 IFTA Film & Drama Awards merely days away, it’s time to look at one of the busiest and most economically vibrant areas of the industry today, and that is animation.

The awards ceremony takes place this Saturday, April 8th and will see the next generation of Irish animators honoured for their achievements in the field so far, for there are many to come.

In the last few months alone, we have emphasised the promise of our animation sector in the context of post-Brexit Ireland, announced the launch of Cake and Studio Moshi’s new Gingerbread Animation in Co. Dublin, and the upcoming Lighthouse Studio from twice Oscar-nominated Cartoon Saloon in Co. Kilkenny.

Define Intervention, Sean Cunningham
An Irish priest comes face to face with God, Jesus Christ and his own inner struggle with faith, none of which turn out to be what he expected, in this over the top sci-fi adventure.

Voice actors on this project are Owen O' Donnell, Arin Hanson, Jon Jafari and Padraig Kenny. Cunningham is a BCFE graduate, as are his production teammates Paul Kavanagh, Padraic Byrne and Nicole Storck.

‘Define Intervention’ recently picked up three awards at the Dingle Animation Festival for Best Art Direction, Best Director and the overall Student Animation of the year.

Don't Forget the Bread, Gary Gill
Four children find themselves caught up in the 1916 Rising on the streets of Dublin. What to do? Most importantly ‘Don’t Forget The Bread’!

This Wiggleywoo project is written and directed by Gary Gill, produced by Susan Broe, and was commissioned as part of  RTÉ’s Animated Shorts Scheme 2016.

The Lost Letter, Kealan O'Rourke
This project tells the tale of a young boy whose love for Christmas is not dampened by his mean spirited neighbour, who doesn't want the holiday to come at all.

Directed by Kealan O’Rourke and co-written O'Rourke, Will Collins and Niall Murphy, ‘The Lost Letter’ features the vocal talents of Kate Winslet (Collateral Beauty).

Second to None, Vincent Gallagher
Frederick Butterfield has always been runner up to his twin brother Herman. When Herman, the older by a mere minute, becomes the world's oldest man, Frederick finally sees an opportunity to be first place. 'Second to None' is a stop-motion comedy about ambition, where second best is never enough.

This project is written, directed and edited by Vincent Gallagher, and produced by Damian Farrell. It achieved the James Horgan Award Best Animation award and the European Federation of Film Societies Don Quijote Award last year, both at the 2016 Galway Film Fleadh.
