‘Zig and Zag’
Animated children’s series ‘Zig and Zag’ is currently airing weekdays on RTÉjr.

Produced by Double Z Enterprises, Flickerpix and Jam Media along with broadcasters RTÉjr and CBBC, the 26 episode series follows alien tween brothers Zig and Zag who crash land in humdrum suburbia and set up home. On their adventures they make the most of what planet earth has to offer.

The newly formed Raygun were drafted in last year to deliver full audio records and post on the series.

Raygun is a boutique post production house located in the heart of Dublin. They are a collective of creative audio engineers, motion graphics artists and talented editors who specialise in commercial campaigns, documentaries, features and digital content.

This new facility is headed up by the partnership of Jess Felton and Dean Jones, both well known in the industry.

Here, Dean Jones takes us through the work provided by Raygun on the zany series.

Dean Jones: Our very own Tim O'Donovan worked very closely with ‘Zig and Zag’ and Director Niall Mooney, recording dialogues and editing the radio plays into shape for the animators in Jam to begin the creative process of bringing the characters to life.

Eoghan McDonnell was then drafted in by Raygun to begin the very exciting stage of building up the sound design layers to create the sonic world of Burbia, the neighborhood Zig and Zag now call home after crash-landing there on a journey from home planet Zog.

Every footstep, crash, donkey, goat stampede, ice cream van, Big Mo Ray device, cloning machine, squelch, splat, fart and underpant elastic snap was expertly created by Eoghan and ably assisted by our very own Colm O'Rourke, especially in the footstep department.

Jonathan Casey was tasked with the job of providing the musical score for all 26 episodes, and he did so brilliantly with a huge amount of fun, serious musical chops and some of the finest organ and theremin sounds known to man. His musical embellishments really tied every episode together. We can't forget Fergal Davis who provided some memorable pop tunes in some of the episodes.

Tim then took all the elements and finessed them into 26 awesome sounding episodes, smoothing out dialogue here, pushing exploding ice cream machines there, making sure everything from giant wasps and talking cosmic marshmallows to invisible silent cats sounded as sweet as possible.

The result is 26 10 minute helpings of anarchic chaotic fun and music that was a complete joy to work on from start to finish. Here's to season two!
