Aerial Filming Ireland reveal details of Stock Library
21 Apr 2015 : Seán Brosnan
Aerial Filming Ireland has been in operation since May 2013
The AFI Stock at Aerial Filming Ireland has been created by filmmakers to help filmmakers get the most out of their budget.

Aerial Filming Ireland has been in operation since May 2013 and Steven Flynn, as well as being their pilot, is an Emmy award winning cinematographer and Editor. AFI flies a Freefly Cinestar 8 Heavylift using a MOVI MR Gimbal for camera stabilization. They are currently transitioning to shooting 4k original and offering multiple formats on the site. When possible they use their MOVI M10 to gather ground footage at a location.

The fluid movement from the MOVI M10 on the ground cuts really well with footage coming from the MOVI MR in the air. Customers have the option of purchasing a single aerial clip from any location, a set of MOVI clips from the ground, or all the clips from same location at a discounted price.

Aerial Filming Ireland are also now flying a Cinestar 8 + Black Magic Production 4K Camera (shoots 4K RAW dng /ProRes 4K), a Cinestar 8 + Black Magic Pocket Cinema (shoots HD/RAW dng/ProRes) and a DJI Inspire 1 (shoots 4K/ 60 fps).

One of the benefits of such a company is that they can eliminate the expensive route of sending a crew out to get that “one shot” when a film is already in post. It is now possible to browse AFI Stock and pick up the shot that is needed. If the shot is not there, it can be ordered on a deadline if Aerial Filming Ireland feels it can work on their site and if it fits into their schedule.

The company also don’t charge you for custom ordering stock that you end up not using, but they are discerning when it comes to what they think they can resell.

Because they are editors themselves, AFI approach production from the edit suite and are building the site to offer more than just stock footage. They let a customer pick the part of the shot they want themselves so they leave the shots pretty much as they come off the camera. They also partner with musicians, such as Dublin-based composer Damien Walsh, so that customers can browse music and video clips independently.

As a new concept in stock footage and a brand new site, AFI currently have a large backlog of footage they are adding, so filmmakers are asked to check back often and follow them on Twitter (@aerialfilmingie) which they constantly update with upcoming locations. AFIstock.com is now open for beta testing and will be fully operational from May 10th.

An example of their work can be seen on the latest Failte Ireland 'Ancient East' promo. The final shot – Hill of Tara – is an AFI stock shot (the promo can be seen here).
