Pitch It! Give your project the best chance to make it to the screen
Screen Skills Ireland, in partnership with Screen Skillnet, is seeking participants for Pitch It! A workshop about The Art of Pitching: Preparation, Inner Clarification, and Congruence of Communication.

The course will be conducted by Sibylle Kurz, a communication skill trainer who has focused on ‘The Art Of Pitching’ for production companies, producers and writers since 1995. She teaches at renowned national and international universities, film schools and art-academies. Additionally, she supports in individual coaching session the professional and personal development for creative people in the bigger fields of “Arts & Culture”.

The course will begin on Monday, March 23rd and run for two full days with 90min workshop on day 3. The venue is yet to be confirmed and the cost for the course is €250.

Learn how to:

  • Conduct research and preparation before approaching any potential financing and distribution partner;
  • Prepare a convincing pitch that will attract interest;
  • Understand different pitching situations and the appropriate approach;
  • Deal with individual mindsets and the psychology involved in the challenging pitching situation;
  • Pitch with clarity, consistency and persuasion;
  • And then learn how to enjoy it!

Pitching an idea or a concept to decision-makers is a nerve-wracking process to some people – and a walk in the park for others. Everyone can learn to create a better pitch and increase their chances of pitching successfully.

This workshop aims to help participants understand the importance of good, consistent, and concise communication that enables you to present a project in a few words, never forgetting to sell to the listener.

Communication skills are by far the most forgotten aspect of the selling process. This course covers two main elements:

  • Research and preparation before approaching any type of buyers, partners, or financiers
  • Understanding support/hindrance through personal attitudes/values

This workshop will give participants the opportunity to acknowledge and overcome their weaknesses in pitching and presentations, enabling participants to present their projects, ideas, concepts and themselves. Over the course of the workshop, participants will analyse and improve the pitching process, and integrate this learning into the preparation of an individual project presentation, while developing their individual communication resources and competences. Pitches will be videoed and reviewed in order to offer appropriate feedback. Projects will be reviewed from the perspective of theme and their emotional impact, as well as an appraisal of the status and required further development steps of the project. Pitches will be fine-tuned towards the needs of the appropriate pitching partners.

Structure:

Day 1

  • An overview of the theoretical aspects of pitching & communication
  • Practical exercises to enable participants to tailor their pitches according to their individual needs

Day 2

  • Further practical exercises
  • Video exercises and feedback

Day 3

  • Small group 90 minute scheduled workshops. Additional constructive feedback will be given to reflect on in these sessions, and there will be an opportunity to ask further questions.

The results should be several different versions of pitches in both length and approach for the projects. Participants will gain an understanding of the need for individual and particular project related preparation, as well as receiving a basic tool-box for future pitches.

Participant Profile:

This workshop is aimed at experienced producers and development executives (individual or in teams) in film, drama, documentary, animation. Participants must have an industry track record with at least one professional producing/writing/development credit.

Please note that places are limited.

Minimum requirements: participants will each bring their own project to this session. It can be a project from any genre (fiction, non-fiction, animation) but must be in a realistic state of development. The course requires some synopsis/intention preparation in advance. The course is ideal for professionals preparing to pitch at markets.

Regarding IP and copyright, please be prepared to workshop an idea and share aspects of story development.
