Screen Training Ireland, in partnership with Animation Skillnet and D.I.T, Announce Animation Apprenticeship
11 Dec 2017 :
Minister for Education and Skills Richard Bruton TD has launched 26 new national apprenticeships for development as part of the expanded Apprenticeship Scheme.

In great news for the Irish animation sector, one of the new apprenticeships announced is a Level 9 Apprenticeship in Animation (CGI Technical Artist).  This new programme is a partnership between Screen Training Ireland, Animation Skillnet and Dublin Institute of Technology.

Speaking about the new apprenticeship, Sorcha Loughnane, Screen Training Ireland said:

“This apprenticeship is a huge endorsement of the success and vibrancy of the Irish animation sector, and will be a key initiative in the development and formalisation of work-based learning in the sector.  The creative technology area is growing rapidly, and industry-led programmes such as this will be critical in developing highly skilled talent in animation, VFX, games and digital production.  We look forward to working with the Apprenticeship Council, Animation Skillnet, DIT and industry on the development of this exciting apprenticeship.”

Screen Training Ireland is focusing heavily on work-based learning to develop cutting-edge industry skills, and is collaborating with a number of Education and Training Boards (ETBs) to develop a range of on-the-job initiatives in Animation, VFX and Live Action film and TV production, including a Career Traineeship in Kilkenny in association with Cartoon Saloon, Kilkenny Carlow ETB, Animation Skillnet and Young Irish Filmmakers.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeship is a programme of structured education and training which formally combines and alternates learning in the workplace with learning in an education and training institution. An apprenticeship prepares participants for a specific occupation and leads to a qualification on the National Framework of Qualifications. Since the 1970s it is estimated that over 105,000 apprentices have been trained in Ireland. In 2017 alone over 4,700 apprentices will have registered and started their training. There is a current population of over 12,000 apprentices with 4,900 participating employers (November 2017).

Traineeships

Traineeship is a programme of structured training which combines learning in an education and training setting and in the workplace aiming to improve recruitment and employment outcomes for participants and increase retention and productivity within industry.

Traineeship gives participants the opportunity to develop cutting edge skills and knowledge on-the-job, making them more skilled, more employable and enhancing their career options and enables employers to access a pipeline of talent and learners.
