‘Kubrick by Candlelight’, ‘Second to None’ & ‘Wave’ selected for Encounters
03 Aug 2017 : Katie McNeice
The leading animation and shorts festival is set to showcase the Irish titles during its run from September 19-24th in the UK.

‘Wave’ is the latest short from Oscar-winning filmmaker Ben Cleary, which earned the Tiernan McBride award for Best Short at the Galway Film Fleadh, in addition to the Donal Gilligan Award for Best Cinematography.

It sees a man wakes up from a coma speaking a fully formed, but unrecognisable language, baffling linguistics experts from around the globe. Cleary co-directs with TJ O’Grady Peyton based on his own script. Cinematography comes from Burschi Wojnar, while art director Jill Beecher (The Revenant) and editor Nathan Nugent (Room) are also credited.

‘Wave’ screens at 14:00 on Wednesday, September 20th as part of the Short Film 2 - Talk to Me strand.

Second to None
Writer/Director Vincent Gallagher’s meticulous stop-motion project received the award for Best Animation at the 2017 IFTA Film & Drama Awards and has screened at a hugely impressive slate of festivals to date, including Tribeca and the Newport Beach Film Festival.

The short follows Frederick Butterfield, who has always been runner up to his twin brother Herman. When Herman, the older by a mere minute, becomes the world's oldest man, Frederick finally sees an opportunity to be first place.

Damian Farrell produces with Aoife Noonan as production designer, Gallagher as editor and Ben O’Connor on model making. ‘Second to None’ screens at 22:00 on Thursday, September 21st as part of the Comedy: Love Bites stream.

Kubrick by Candlelight
This will be a first look at David O’Reilly’s short film which is the winning project of the 2016 FilmOffaly Bursary Award. The directorial debut from O’Reilly comes after a steady and impressive career in locations, with projects including ‘Rogue One’, ‘World War Z’, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ and ‘Inception’.

‘Kubrick By Candlelight’ is a light hearted romantic comedy set behind the scenes of the filming in Ireland in 1973 of Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon. The project also screens in the Comedy: Love Bites stream. Vinnie Jassal produces.

David O’Reilly, Writer/Director:
“I’m incredibly excited to have been selected by the prestigious Encounters Film Festival for KBC. It’s such a fantastic festival and I can’t wait to see all of the other films on offer including Ben Cleary’s Wave and Vincent Gallagher’s Second To None. It’s a testament to all the hard work of our producer Vinnie Jassal and all of our cast and crew that the film is amongst such high quality short films and animations and I couldn’t be happier for people to finally see the film.”

Darragh O’Toole (South), Amy Hughes (Vikings), Phelim Drew (Angela’s Ashes) join newcomers Mark Lawrence as Mark Thornton and Michael Thomas Nolan as Stanley Kubrick. Rounding out the cast is impressionist and comedian Al Foran as Mick Molloy as well as Mark Webb (Colour Me Kubrick), Lisa Moore and Alan Curran. The film is narrated by acting legend Brian Cox (Churchill).
