Wednesday’s #IrishFilm Highlights at the 2017 Galway Film Fleadh
12 Jul 2017 : Katie McNeice
Shorts Programmer Eibh Collins & 'QED' Director Amy-Joyce Hastings
Following on from the great success of the Fleadh’s opening night, with Pat Collins’ poignant and creative ‘Song of Granite’, there are many more Irish titles to keep an eye out for over the coming days.

In today’s line-up we have not one but two shorts categories featuring Irish talent, with feature films ‘Rocky Ros Muc’ and ‘Making It’ following in the evening.

Click the links below each section for tickets and further information.

New Irish Shorts 1: Town Hall Theatre, 12:00
This particular shorts stream features adolescent coming-of-age stories with ‘Now You Don’t’ (Director: Loren McNerney Quigley, Producer Gillian Morrissey) which sees a young girl wake up invisible after embarrassing herself in front of her crush. Similar is ‘The Lesson’ (Director: Orla Ó Muirí, Producers: Elise Brown & Rachel Cuffe) which sees tensions rise in a secondary school when boys are told it will no longer be co-ed.

Strong female characters struggle in ‘Reach’ (Directors: John White & Caroline Grace-Cassidy, Producer: Kevin Cassidy) and ‘Jelly Baby’ (Director: Naomi Fagan, Producers: Isabelle Blanche, Naomi Fagan & IADT). The first sees an ordinary woman undone by an extraordinary secret, while the second sees a single mother (IFTA-winning Charleigh Bailey) as she struggles with balancing maternal duties and her own desires.

Romantic relationships are explored in ‘QED’ (Director: Amy-Joyce Hastings, Producers Michael O’Kelly, Trisha Flood, Danielle Collins & Jannik Ohlendieck) and ‘Jaffa’ (Director: Jason Branagan, Producer: Roisin O’Brien). ‘QED’ is a study in sacrificial love, while ‘Jaffa’ sees a young man struggle to tell his partner he can’t have children.

Finally in ‘Spotless’ (Director: Emily Murray, Producers: Aisling Ní Chulain, Marie Lecoq, Mathew Ashe, Emily Murray & Jamie Hoope) are the misadventures of Martin Vaughn, the chairperson of the Birr Tidy Towns Committee. This contrasts with the poignant ‘Man to Man’ (Director: A.W. Stevenson, Producers: A.W. Stevenson & Dave Minogue) in which a father and son relationship is captured in a series of conversations over ten years.

New Irish Shorts: Way Out West: Radisson Blu, 14:30
The most eccentric of this stream are ‘A Short Film About a Nut’ (Director: Kevin Moloney, Producer: Brian Coughlan) and ‘A Little Bit of Tear’ from Director/Producer Michael Flatley, with the first showing what happens when an OCD burglar breaks into an untidy apartment, and the second a homeless clown who gives a girl he likes the performance of a lifetime.

‘Mr. Natural: The Laurence Wilkie Story’ (Director/Producer Ray McBride) and ‘Nathan’ (Director/Producer John Madden) explore the real lives of Donegal’s first ever body builder and a young Galway City man who lost his life when he jumped from a bridge during a moment of madness.

Millennials take centre stage in ‘Wild Fire Nights’ (Director: Emma Eliza Regan, Producers: Emma Eliza Regan, Joyce Ferder Rankin & Steve Kingston) and ‘Emily’ (Director/Producer: Allan El Atrash). ‘Wild Fire Nights’ forces the reckless Lila to face the consequences of her actions while ‘Emily’ struggles to adapt to normal life after returning from a year out of college.

Lastly in this category is the quaint and comedic ‘An Mhallacht’ (Director: Cóilín Ó ScolaÍ, Producer: James Ryan) in which Mayo are in the All-Ireland final again and Dr. Green finds himself treating the last surviving member of the cursed 1951 Mayo team. Also screening is the winner of the 48 Hour Film Challenge.
