Guiding Lights 8 Programme

Director Kate Dolan and Writer Ailbhe Keogan selected for the Guiding Lights 8 Programme.

Following a highly competitive selection process, with more than 215 applications received from across the UK and Ireland, Lighthouse and Creative Skillset are delighted to reveal the new participants to join the eighth edition of the UK’s most prestigious mentoring scheme.

Made up of a diverse and ambitious group of film talent, this year’s participants bring with them a wide array of influences, sensibilities and stories, and alongside their film work are active across a range of formats, including fiction and documentary, adult and children’s TV, theatre, commercials, learning disability film exhibition and immersive cinema experiences.

Through the Irish Film Board, Screen Training Ireland's supports an Irish writer and director to participate on the programme. This will be STI's third time partnering with GL. Previous Irish Guiding Lights alumni include Michael Lavelle and Ursula Rani Sarma on GL4 and Carmel Winters and Thomas Martin on GL 5. Other Irish participants include Oonagh Kearney who participated in GL 4.

Writer Ailbhe Keogan started her writing career with her novel Molly & the Cyclops, published by Hag’s Head Press, in 2006. From here, she moved into screenwriting. Her first feature film, ‘Run & Jump’ was selected as of part of the Berlin Talent Campus Script Station and the Sundance Institute’s lab. Directed by Oscar-nominated Steph Green, it premiered at Tribeca in 2012 and the script went on to win numerous awards including a 2014 IFTA nomination and a Zebbie for best screenplay 2014.

Ailbhe’s first short film script, ‘After Word’, was shortlisted for two national Irish short film award schemes and is currently showing at festivals around the world. Her second feature film, ‘Joy & Mully’, is due to go into production in 2016. She is currently scripting ‘Sidelined’, a feature film for Parallel Films and the Irish Film Board. She has two films in development: ‘Indivisible’ – a political thriller set against the Western Sahara Occupation, and ‘Oh Naturale!’ – a philosophical thriller exploring youth and beauty in an imagined future.

Director Kate Dolan graduated with an Honours Degree in Film & Television Production from the National Film School, IADT in 2012. There, she majored in Directing Drama and minored in Editing. Her graduation short ‘Breathe In’ was selected for a number of Irish and international film festivals, and won Best Student Short at WAMM Fest 2013 in Maryland, US. Kate has worked in various areas of filmmaking such as Art Department and Production, and often edits and grades her own work. After graduating she worked as a Broadcast Producer in ad agency TBWA Dublin for almost 2 years, and more recently has been directing TV commercials and online content in Dublin.

In 2014, she attended Berlinale Talents to develop her short ‘Little Doll’ at the Short Film Script Station. The film premiered as part of Generation Kplus at Berlinale 2016, and has since been selected for several other International festivals. Kate was recently included in the British Council’s fiveFilms4freedom 2016 Global List – 33 inspiring people from around the world promoting freedom, equality and LGBT rights every day.

First launched in 2006, Guiding Lights is the UK film industry’s leading mentoring scheme, supporting emerging film talent through high-level mentoring and a range of training and networking activities.

During their time on the scheme, each mentee is matched with a leading film industry professional who provides advice and guidance over a nine-month period. The last Guiding Lights scheme saw, amongst others, Ben Wheatley (Sightsees, High Rise), Andrew Macdonald (Trainspotting, The Last Kind of Scotland), Matt Charman (Suite Francais, Bridge of Spies) and Walter Murch (Apocalypse Now, the English Patient) join an illustrious list of former mentors, including Danny Boyle, Barbara Broccoli, Hossein Amini, Sam Mendes, Joanna Hogg, Alex Garland, Abi Morgan,Nira Park and Kenneth Branagh.
