‘Domestic Divas’ to Air this Autumn
21 Jul 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
Many of those who grew up through the Celtic Tiger years have side-stepped basic life skills such as cooking, mending, sewing and cleaning, instead having take-away dinners, bringing the washing home once a week and throwing out things that aren’t as new as the moment we bought it.

‘Domestic Divas’ sees Aisli Madden and Cat Lawlor on a mission to help the helpless, to demonstrate basic life skills that came naturally to our parent’s generation and not so easily to those in their 20s and 30s. They will share the knowledge, skills and power to live life better – to eat more healthily, deliciously and nutritiously, to care for a home like a boss, and to take pride in ourselves, inside and out. They also want to do all of this with the least amount of fuss possible.

During the series, Aisli & Cat will help a single mother who desperately wants to throw a 1st birthday to remember for her special little boy. They’ll meet a social butterfly who has no time to cook or clean but wants to stop relying on his flatmate to do all of the housework. They’ll come up with healthy, nutritious and easy ways for a busy working mother of 2 to feed her family with fresh ingredients straight from her Diva-built pop-up garden. The Divas will do this and much more.

The brand new series ‘Domestic Divas’ will remind everyone of the comforts of home and be a masterclass in achieving domestic bliss. The 6 x 30 mins series will air on RTÉ1 in the autumn. The series is a Mind the Gap production produced by Bernadine Carraher, directed by Graeme Wells and is currently being edited in Screen Scene by Ciara Brophy.

A second upcoming production from Mind the Gap is ‘The Bee’. In 2014, children from over 1000 schools from all 32 counties of Ireland took part in the Eason Spelling Bee, a spelling competition which tests 5th and 6th class primary school children to find Ireland’s best speller. They came from the farms, villages and towns of Ireland and their families represented the rich diversity of Irish communities.

In this fascinating documentary, award winning director Garry Keane meets some of these amazing children as they prepare for the biggest test of their young lives. The result is an inspirational film that captures the next generation of young Irish people and their determination to make their schools and families proud. They share their love of words and of learning and they share their hopes and dreams for the future. From the County finals to the nerve-wrecking Provincial Finals on Tubridy radio show on 2FM, these children experienced tension, panic, disappointment and elation with every word and every syllable spelled as the nation listened with bated breath.

‘The Bee’, the documentary, will be a must-see programme on RTE this Autumn. It is directed by Garry Keane with camera by Michael O’Donovan and shooting APs Enda O’Dowd and Jack Britton. Sound was by Mick Cassidy and editing by Paul Giles.
