Galway Strengthens UNESCO Creative Cities Network Bid by Sending Delegation to China
07 Oct 2014 : Seán Brosnan
Three delegates from Galway attended the Annual Meeting of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in Chengdu, China last weekend. Declan Gibbons, Manager, Galway Film Centre, Gary McMahon, A/Senior Executive Officer, Galway City Council and Marilyn Gaughan, Arts Officer, Galway County Council attended the three-day networking event along with 35 cities from across the globe.

Galway is bidding to join the Creative Cities Network as a UNESCO City of Film and a formal application was submitted on behalf of the City and County in March of this year. Since 2004, 41 cities have been nominated by the UNESCO Director General to join the network which promotes creativity, culture, heritage and education.

This year UNESCO received 63 applications from 34 countries to join the network and 50 were deemed to be worthy of consideration with 20 out of 50 expected to join the network when the decision is made in November. These submissions are currently under evaluation through an internal and external process involving international experts, research centres, universities and international associations specialized in urban development, culture and creative industries.

Manager of the Galway Film Centre Declan Gibbons said:I was delighted with the support for joining the network from both local authorities and the follow though commitment of sending a delegation to this international seminar. To be sitting at the table with mega cities like Buenos Aires was incredible. They have as many people working in the audio-visual industry as live in the city of Galway. It was a terrific networking opportunity and I think the team we sent out did Galway proud. Being allowed to join is a highly competitive process but our visit to China demonstrated a serious commitment to contribute to this network.

The network includes such major world cultural centres as Edinburgh, Berlin, Chengdu, Buenos Aries, Fabriano, Shanghai and Seoul, and both Japan and China are particularly well represented.

Of Galway’s sister cities, Bradford in England is one of two existing Cities of Film while Seattle in the USA is bidding for a City of Literature designation.

Dublin is currently the only Irish city in the network having been designated a UNESCO City of Literature in 2009.
