Northern Ireland-based Titanic Studios gets £14m Extension
14 Aug 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
Titanic Studios, the production facilities in Northern Ireland where ‘Game of Thrones’ is shot, is to add two stages as part of a £14 million (€17.5 million) upgrade. The facilities, which sit on an eight-acre site in Belfast, received the greenlight for the expansion plans from Northern Ireland’s environment minister Mark H. Durkan on Tuesday. The extension will provide an additional 100,000 sq. ft. of production facilities, which will increase the site to more than 250,000 sq. ft.

Durkan said the added production capacity would help “put Belfast on the map as one of Europe’s largest film production locations.”

The expansion will include the installation of a solar panel system, which Minister Durkan also welcomed, stating, “It is my aim to ensure planning creates a better environment and a stronger economy. This development helps to do this.”

Richard Williams, chief executive of Northern Ireland Screen, said the studios represented a global boost for the industry.

“As we move into a new phase of international activity, on the back of the new tax breaks for high-end television drama and animation, Northern Ireland Screen needs to be able to assure the global industry of our continued capability to house large-scale international productions,” he said.

“There is no doubt that the demand for further studio infrastructure exists and the construction of more stages can only assist us with attracting further projects.”

As well as the new stages and solar panel system, there will also be additional production workshops (comprising of 23,000sqft), office space and parking.

Titanic Studios is set on an eight-acre site and incorporates Harland and Wolff shipyard’s former Paint Hall building, which has been converted into four 16,000 sq. ft. stages. Two additional stages, Hurst and MacQuitty, were opened in 2012, providing 21,000 sq. ft. of space each.

The Paint Hall was first used in 2007 by Walden Media and Playtone Prods. for the fantasy sci-fi adventure film ‘City of Ember’, and then by Universal Pictures in 2009 for medieval comedy ‘Your Highness’. From 2010 to 2013, it has been home to seasons one to four of ‘Game of Thrones’, and the fifth season is shooting there now.
