Lights, Camera, Action….as the Cinemagic Film and Television Festival returns this month from 12 - 17 with a packed programme of events for schools and young people.
The action packed programme of film and television events cater for young people aged 12 – 25 who wish to further their skills by participating in the cross-border projects such as ‘CineFocus’ in Filmbase on May 17, which offers young people the chance to watch a series of films and critically review them. School workshops and special events in the education programme will engage young people through moving images, stimulate discussion about social issues and provide opportunities to learn from top film and television industry professionals.
Festival highlights are set to include ‘Online Journalism’ with Film Ireland, ‘The Original Screenplay’ with The Writers Guild of Ireland, ‘Filmmaking’ with Young Irish Filmmakers, ‘Respect Creativity & Protect Copyright’ with The Industry Trust, ‘Film Classification’ with IFCO, ‘Science Fiction Genre Study’ with Euroscript, ‘Future Film Directing’ with The Screen Directors Guild of Ireland, ‘World War I and Film’ with History Live, ‘Film and Folklore’ with Jack Lynch and ‘Creative Writing’ with Fighting Words.
The ‘Industry Spotlight’ workshops feature ‘Inside News’ at TV3, ‘Special Effects Make-up’ with MFK Institute, ‘Animation’ with Oscar Nominated studio Cartoon Saloon and ‘VFX’ with Academy and BAFTA award-winning Visual Effects studio Double Negative.
Northern Irish movie ‘Good Vibrations’ will feature in the education programme with an introduction by BAFTA nominated screenwriters Colin Carberry and Glenn Patterson. Young film fans will also have the chance to see Irish made family drama, ‘Eliot & Me’, and meet the film’s director, producer and young star Ella Connolly. Director Johnny Gogan will lead a discussion after the screening of his film ‘Black Ice’, a story of youthful misadventure set in a border community against the backdrop of the Irish economic crash.
The culmination of the festival will be marked with the inaugural Cinemagic Gala Awards Ceremony in Dublin Castle on June 13. The achievements of young people will be recognised and there will be a showcase of Cinemagic’s far reaching festival outreach work and young talent from ‘Cinemagic Stars’ musical theatre workshops.

IFTN previously reported that Cinemagic patrons Liam Neeson and Pierce Brosnan are set to feature in ‘A Christmas Star’, a Northern Ireland production, the first of its kind, made by Cinemagic International Film and Television Festival for Young People. The call-out for young people to participate in the film production will be announced in May and filming will take place in October 2014.
The travelling young people’s festival takes place in a number of cities around the world including Belfast (Oct 1 – Nov 30), Los Angeles (March 2 – 11), New York (May 26 – 30) and London (dates June 30 – July 3). The Cinemagic Festival programme for under 12s takes place from June 7 – 13.
