Guth na nGael TX Friday 21 March 7.30pm
20 Mar 2014 : Deirdre Molumby
Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh with Declan O'Rourke
The music documentary series Guth na nGael is presented by Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh. Consisting of six episodes, the series traces the history of Irish song and sounds through a number of themes.

Presenter Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh is best known as an Irish fiddler and the lead singer of traditional band Atlan. In each episode, Ní Mhaonaigh tours to different parts of Ireland, playing with and talking to a number of Irish traditional and contemporary musicians about the various themes and issues that emerge in Irish songs through the ages.

Each episode explores a theme, under the headings ‘Home & the Homeland’, ‘Rebel Songs & Defiance’, ‘Unrequited Love’, ‘Spirituality & the Gods’, ‘Liquor & Lust’ and ‘Keening & the Blues’. A wide range of singers are considered, such as balladeers and sean-nós as well as contemporary artists, and the show features enrapturing musical performances filmed in beautiful locations across Ireland.

Director Paddy Hayes states: “For the locations, we kind of chased the musicians around the country, for instance we were in Derry for the programme about rebel songs, we were in Glenstall Abbey, Limerick, with the monks of Glenstall, we met up with Mary Coughlin in her native Galway, we were down in Cork with John Spillane and Karen Casey, and of course we went to Dublin, Bray, to meet Sinéad O’Connor, and inner city Dublin to meet Damien Dempsey.”

Hayes discusses his delight at the positive reception and attention now being given to TV shows that are based on music: “There were a lot of music shows that got buried in the schedule late at night but that seems to be changing. It’s really refreshing to have a music show going out at 7.30 when you have a lot of footfall in the schedule… This is the first time there’s been a series like this, exploring Irish song and indeed the Irish psyche through song.”

Hayes hopes that the show will provoke discussions: “it’s not an academic programme, it’s very much an entertainment programme design, but I would hope that it would garner debate.” Producer Laura Ní Cheallaigh added: “We really hope Guth na nGael engages both music lovers and general Irish audiences on RTÉ - as well as being a really high end music series, each episode under the various themes explores what defines us a people.”

‘Guth na nGael’ is directed by Paddy Hayes, produced by Laura Ní Cheallaigh and presented by Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh. DOP for the show was Colm Hogan, John Brennan was on sound and Conall De Cléir edited. The series is produced by Magamedia, whose next production is the second series of ‘Corp & Anam’. Magamedia’s short film ‘Rubaí’ is showing as part of Tribeca next month (read the full story here) and is an IFTA nominee (read about it here).

Guth na nGael will begin broadcasting on RTÉ1 on Friday 21st March at 7.30pm. It will run for six weeks.
