Writer/director John Carney's new feature film Flora and Son, his first feature since 2016's Sing Street, premiered last night to positive reviews at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.

Starring Irish actors Eve Hewson (Bad Sisters), Kelly Thornton (Clean Break), Jack Reynor (What Richard Did) and breakout Orén Kinlan opposite American star Joseph Gordon Levitt, Carney's film follows "Flora, a single mom who is at war with her son, Max. Trying to find a hobby for Max, she rescues a guitar from a dumpster and finds that one person's trash can be a family's salvation." The film has been praised for its use of a heartwarming musical narrative to tell a small-scale human story.

Carney's previous flms include the Oscar-winning OnceBegin Again and Sing Street and he recently directed seven episodes of the Prime Video series Modern Love.

Kate Erbland of IndieWire called it "a cozy Irish musical about the ways in which music can bond people together, the joy of creation, and the pleasure of someone unpacking their soul, all with that lovely Irish lilt... Where [Carney] takes Flora and Son might be his most satisfying conclusion yet."

The Playlist's Jason Bailey wrote: "When these disparate souls start making music together, we get that very specific kind of goosebump that Carney can so expertly conjure up, the magic moment when these lost people finally find peace and/or love and/or truth, if only for the three-minute increments of a pop song".

Caryn James of The Hollywood Reporter praised the "detailed texture of the characters’ lives" and said "This engaging film takes full advantage of its stylistic DNA".

The film is for sale at the festival and, according to ScreenDaily, streamers including Apple were eager to acquire it for distribution. It does not yet have an Irish release date.
