The BAFTA Film Awards has revealed this year’s longlist with Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin and All Quiet of the Western Front emerge as frontrunners.

The announcement comes ahead of BAFTAs nominations being revealed later this month on January 19th. The longlist stage is based on the votes from the Round 1 period, which closed before the New Year on December. The nomination stage is now open and will run until January 13th.

Netflix’s German WWI drama All Quiet on the Western Front leads the way with 15 nods, Irish dark comedy The Banshees of Inisherin sits in close second with 14. Warner Bros’ Elvis and A24’s Everything Everywhere All At Once both earned 12 mentions, while Paramount’s Top Gun Maverick and Babylon, A24’s Aftersun, and Focus Features Tár all receive eight nods.

This year’s BAFTA ceremony will take place on Sunday, February 19th at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall, a change from the usual home of Royal Albert Hall, and will be hosted by Hayley Attwell.

Irish language feature film and Oscar contender, An Cailín Ciúin/The Quiet Girl has been longlisted for three categories including Film Not in the English Language, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Among the 14 categories longlisted, The Banshees of Inisherin sees key mentions for Irish talent including Best Director and Original Screenplay for Martin McDonagh, all four leading and supporting actors (Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon, and Barry Keoghan), Casting, Cinematography, Costume Design, Editing, Original Score, Production Design, as well as Best Film and Outstanding British Film.

Three Irish actors are longlisted in the Leading Actor category with Daryl McCormack (Good Luck to You, Leo Grande), and Paul Mescal (Aftersun) also featuring alongside Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin).

Irish documentary The Ghost of Richard Harris has been longlisted in the Best Documentary category, while Nothing Compares has been longlisted for Outstanding Debut by a British writer, director, or producer.

The good news for Northern Irish short film An Irish Goodbye continues to come as it is named among the longlist for Best British Short Film, following the news that it has been shortlisted for the Oscars.

The 2023 BAFTA nominations will be announced on January 19th.
