Winner of the Palm D’Or at Cannes, the Cine Concert presentation of Metropolis, and Pat Collins’ latest documentary The Dance, still to screen in Cork.

The 66th Cork International Film Festival started on Friday with an Opening Gala screening of Ali & Ava by acclaimed director Clio Bernard at The Everyman Theatre. The Festival was officially opened at the screening in The Everyman by Lord Mayor of Cork Councillor Colm Kelleher who welcomed the audience and wished the Festival every success with its in-cinema and online programmes.

Upcoming highlights this week include the Cine Concert presentation of Metropolis featuring a new score by Cork composers Irene Buckley and Linda Buckley, and The Seven Ages of Noël Brown – with both screening Tuesday evening. The terrific climate change documentary The Ants and the Grasshopper (with a post-screening panel discussion) and for music lovers, Karen Dalton: In My Own Time, which both screen on Wednesday evening.

Titane, the winner of the Palme D’Or at Cannes this year, will screen on Wednesday with Pat Collins’ mesmeric documentary The Dance screening on Thursday evening. For pure entertainment, don’t miss CIFF’s Guilty Pleasures strand, which includes cult favourites Sleepaway Camp and Clueless plus the Trail of Discovery, which features film costumes and treasures from CIFF’s Digital Archive that continues across the city and can be enjoyed at your leisure.

Speaking at the Opening, Chair of the CIFF board, Barney Whelan, spoke about the powerful medium of film. “The arts in general, and films in particular, represent some of the most powerful ways in which such understanding and respect can be promoted,” Whelan said. “It is a medium that is not bound in its reach. It can reach to all strata and sectors of society, and across national and linguistic boundaries.”

Festival Director and CEO Fiona Clark addressed the opening night audience. “We were all reminded over the past year, how important, and human, our need is to experience and share stories collectively, and in the moment,” said Clark. “And what better way to share real life stories, or escape to fictional new worlds than through the magic of movies.”

There is something for everyone in this year’s Festival, which includes 80 feature films, 120 shorts, a major Female Visions Retrospective, new strands exploring climate issues and culinary cinema, alongside a popular family and schools’ programme, film and mental health focus, 10 awards, county screenings, all followed by a nine day online Festival from 13th through 21st November.

The full programme and tickets are now available at corkfilmfest.org or via the MyCIFF App.
