IFTA announces final week of Online Film Discussion Series

IFTA Online Film Discussion Series
The Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA) has announced another week of Online discussions in the lead up to this year’s IFTA Awards ceremony.

These discussions allow audiences to engage with the cast, crew, and craftspeople behind all of the submitted films for the 2021 Best Film Category. 

This series (online Q&A events, interviews & Panel discussions with the filmmakers and talent involved - Directors, Writers, Producers, Acting and Craft) ensures that each film has every opportunity to engage with Irish Academy Members and Voters throughout the viewing and voting period as well as providing the general public with an invaluable insight into what goes into making a top-calibre film.

Gretel & Hansel (4pm Tuesday, June 8th)

In AttendanceDirector Ozgood Perkins, and Executive Producers Macdara Kelleher and Sandra Lee-Ying.

When their mother descends into madness, siblings Gretel and Hansel must fend for themselves in the dark and unforgiving woods. Hungry and scared, they fortuitously stumble upon a bounty of food left outside an isolated home. Invited inside by the seemingly friendly owner, the children soon suspect that her generous but mysterious behaviour is part of a sinister plan to do them harm.

The film is directed by Oz Perkins, and produced by Fred Berger, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, and Dan Kagan, with a screenplay by Rob Hayes, and executive produced by Macdara Kelleher and Sandra Lee-Ying. Sophia Lillis and Sam Leakey portray the title characters, alongside Charles Babalola, Jessica De Gouw, and Alice Krige.

I Never Cry (4pm Wednesday June 9th)

When Ola’s father dies on a building site in Ireland, she must travel there to bring his remains back to Poland. Having a complicated relationship with her father and resenting him for not being there for his family, his presence in recent years had been limited to sending regular paychecks. Money is the only thing that connected him to Ola, with the promise to buy a car for her eighteenth birthday. Dealing with foreign bureaucracy and her father’s acquaintances in her own street-smart way, Ola learns her biggest dream wasn’t a car, but getting to know who her father really was.

The Evening Redness in the South (6pm Wednesday June 9th)

In Attendance: Writer/Director/Producer Colin Hickey

The Evening Redness in the South is an entirely dialogue-free dramatic feature film, a visual tone poem following several workers on a building site as their daily work and family lives becomes infused with their deepest memories, dreams, anxieties and desires. It was filmed in Co. Cork.

Wolfwalkers (2.15pm Thursday June 10th)

In Attendance: Producer Paul Young, Writer Will Collins and Second Unit Director Mark Mullery.

In a time of superstition and magic, when wolves are seen as demonic and nature an evil to be tamed, a young apprentice hunter, Robyn, comes to Ireland with her father to wipe out the last pack. But when Robyn saves a wild native girl, Mebh, their friendship leads her to discover the world of the Wolfwalkers and transform her into the very thing her father is tasked to destroy.

"Here is an animated film that finds new beauty in ancient traditions; a film that fights back against the temptation to surrender what little magic this world still has left, and fulfills Cartoon Saloon's promise along the way," David Ehrlich, indieWire.
