BBC Academy Digital Cities returns with a series of free events for the creative industries

Digital Cities Virtual returns on the 24th November for another fantastic line-up of Online events for people working in or interested in TV and related creative industries.

The online series of events runs across three days: Tuesday 24th, Wednesday 25th, and Thursday 26th of November with a full and varied schedule.

For those looking to get on and get into the industry, ScreenSkills will be back with a full line up of best practice and advice sessions on CV’s, networking, and interviews; there’s a chance to have a virtual 1-2-1 Tea With a Talent Manager as the talent teams from BBC Studios, Sony Pictures & Channel 4 are on hand with advice on making your CV stand out from the crowd.

The BBC Academy will also be offering a triple bill of training sessions for you to brush up on your digital skills - this month it's Shooting, Editing, and Livestreaming on your smartphone, and The SharpFutures team will be hosting a showcase on short form with a chance to receive feedback from Industry professionals from BBC Three and Channel 4 – no need to be a pro, just watch the Academy Shooting and Editing sessions and put their tips into practice.

Insights on careers and opportunities in the screen industries continue with ScreenWorks looking at the role of the Location Manager and if you like coming up with ideas, love a good story, and know what makes exciting content then you can’t afford to miss Salford University Nations & Regions session on How to Succeed as a Development Producer. There are insights into how the Creative Scale-Up programme could boost your business and there’s the chance to hear from award-winning creative director and artist, Amrit Singh as he talks creative entrepreneurship, content production, and taking advantage of social media strategy to make platforms work for you.

November’s sessions also deliver an exciting line up of masterclasses and panel sessions:

  • Fans of His Dark Material have a treat in store as Gary Raymond, BBC Wales presenter will be talking to an insider panel about the commissioning and filming of the series in Cardiff.
  • Belfast Film Festival will see actor and comedian Michael Smiley in conversation about his career to date and The Docs Ireland Festival will be running a special workshop led by Alison Millar, director of a new Channel 4 documentary about her friend Lyra McKee, who was fatally shot during rioting in Derry in 2019.  
  • Salford University’s Nations & Regions has esteemed film editor, Oral Ottey talking about his career as a film editor on some of TV’s biggest shows - from Game of Thrones to Save MeGeneration Kill, and Cracker.  
  • Hello Culture is back with a panel that looks to go beyond the common perceptions of disabled practitioners and promises to explore how artists are using technology and digital to redefine practice, access, and audience.
  • Fans of the Edinburgh Festival and Edinburgh Fringe can join Journalist Aasmah Mir to find out what happened the year the world’s oldest Arts festival went virtual.
  • Manchester’s School of Digital Arts will be revealing their immersive virtual reality project - Audience with a Hero - where you could meet, quiz, and interview your favourite stars and historical figures.

All this and the BBC Young Reporter Team and BBC STEM will be delivering workshops for young people looking to start their career journey in TV.
