First trailer released for Element Pictures adaptation of Sally Rooney's Normal People
17 Jan 2020 : News Desk
Normal People will feature on BBC Three and Hulu.
Filming for the show took place in Dublin, Sligo and Italy, with Oscar-nominated director Lenny Abrahamson (Room, The Little Stranger, Frank) and award-winning director Hettie McDonald (Howard’s End) sharing the directorial duties.

Normal People is an Element Pictures production for BBC Three and Hulu and was commissioned by Piers Wenger, Tommy Bulfin and Rose Garnett at the BBC. The 12x30 drama has been adapted from the novel by Sally Rooney. Alice Birch and Mark O’Rowe have adapted the novel for TV alongside Rooney.

Normal People tracks the tender but complicated relationship of Marianne and Connell from the end of their school days in small-town west of Ireland to their undergraduate years at Trinity College. At school, he’s well-liked and popular, while she’s lonely, proud and intimidating. But when Connell comes to pick up his mother from her cleaning job at Marianne’s house, a strange and indelible connection grows between the two teenagers – one they are determined to conceal. A year later, they’re both studying in Dublin and Marianne has found her feet in a new social world but Connell hangs at the side lines, shy and uncertain. Honest, smart and intoxicating, Normal People sees the pair weave in and out of each other’s lives and explores just how complicated intimacy and young love can be.

Joining the cast are Sarah Greene (Dublin Murders, Rosie) and Aislín McGuckin (Outlander, The Nephew) alongside some of the most exciting young acting talent in the UK and Ireland.

The series is executive produced by Ed Guiney (The Favourite, Room, Dublin Murders), Andrew Lowe (The Favourite, Room, The Lobster), Emma Norton (Rosie, A Date for Mad Mary) and Anna Ferguson (No Offence, Prisoners’ Wives) for Element Pictures. Sally Rooney and Lenny Abrahamson also serve as executive producers. Tommy Bulfin (Line of Duty, Peaky Blinders) and Rose Garnett executively produce for the BBC. Catherine Magee (Resistance, Rebellion) is the producer of the series.

Following Rooney’s critically acclaimed debut novel Conversations with Friends, she was named 2017’s Sunday Times Writer of the Year Award.  Normal People was long listed for the Man Booker Prize in 2018 and recently, it won 2019’s Book of the Year at the British Book Awards.  In America, Normal People entered the New York Times Bestseller list at #3.

Endeavor Content negotiated the deal with Hulu on behalf of the producers and is handling international sales.  Normal People will premiere on BBC Three and air on BBC One. It will air next year on the BBC and on Hulu.
