IFTN Festive Q&A with Ann Skelly of 'Death & Nightingales'
14 Dec 2018 : Nathan Griffin
In the run in to Christmas, we have invited some of Ireland’s leading Film & TV talents to take part in IFTN’s festive Q&A.

One of Ireland’s most promising rising stars; Ann Skelly initially came to prominence through her role as Rachel Reid in the successful Irish soap ‘Red Rock’. After appearing in television mini-series ‘Little Women’ and RTE’s ‘Rebellion’, Skelly received much acclaim for her performance in the feature film ‘Kissing Candice’.

The role earned her an IFTA nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role - Film and was a contributing factor in an IFTA Rising Star nomination at the 2018 Irish Film & Drama awards. Most recently Skelly played the lead in Allan Cubitt’s three part mini-series ‘Death and Nightingales’ opposite Jamie Dornan and Matthew Rhys.

IFTN journalist Nathan Griffin caught up with Skelly ahead of the festive season.

What was your highlight of 2018?

“Doing Death and Nightingales (pluggy plug plug). I probably sound like such a young naive actor type saying my highlight was a job, but insert shruggy emoji here. It was a lot of fun, and I’m a huge fan of Rhys & Cubitt, and I made loads of pals for life.”

What are you most looking forward to working on in the New Year?

“There’s a few really interesting projects up in the air at the moment that I’ll look forward to watching even if I don’t get to work on them. But I genuinely have no idea what’s going to happen.”

What was your favourite Film of 2018?

“So far, maybe ‘Tully’ because it surprised me how much I liked it. Charlize Theron is incredible in it. I read that a genius can make something difficult simple. And she does that. But I can’t imagine it was easy.”

What TV Show did you binge watch this year?

“Sharp objects, for me, was just perfect in every way. I appreciate a good soundtrack as well.”

What Irish talent have you been impressed with over the last 12 months?

“Jordanne Jones. She’s the most emotionally intelligent person I’ve ever met, and is just extraordinary in everything she does.”

What International talent would you most like to work with?

“Jean Marc a hundred and million percent. He directed Big Little Lies and Sharp objects and I just love his work very much.”

What two film/television personalities would you most like to have dinner with? (invite over for Christmas dinner) (Dead/Alive)

“John Cassavetes and Peter Falk. Because they’d be good friends, and maybe then I’d be a friend. I was going to say Gena Rowlands but I think it’d be too third-wheely, or like an awkward threesome nobody wanted.”

What’s your favourite movie to watch on Christmas day?

“I like the Addams family the one where Debbie marries Fester, I don’t know why it makes me feel Christmas-esque. Fester reminds me of my uncle so I think it’s a familiarity thing.”

Viewers can catch Skelly in Allan Cubitt’s ‘Death and Nightingales’, which is available of the RTE Player.
