The Nightingale Starring Aisling Franciosi Set to Premiere at the 75th Venice Film Festival
07 Sep 2018 : Nathan Griffin
Starring Irish actress Aisling Franciosi, ‘The Nightingale’ makes its world premiere at the coveted Venice Film Festival in Italy on Friday, September 7th.

An Australian made film, ‘The Nightingale’ is set in 1820s Tasmania, and follows the story of a 21-year-old Irish convict, Clare (Franciosi) who witnesses the brutal murder of her family by her lieutenant master and his cronies. Unable to get justice, she takes an Aboriginal tracker with her through the wilderness to seek revenge.

An actress and opera singer, Franciosi has risen to prominence through her role in BBC NI’s ‘The Fall’ opposite Jamie Dornan, as well as a part in HBO juggernaut ‘Game of Thrones.’

‘The Nightingale’, which is due to make its world premiere on Friday, September 7th, is produced by Causeway Films and was shot completely on location in Tasmania, Australia.

Assuming the leading role of Clare, Franciosi stars alongside Sam Claflin (‘Me Before You’, ‘Hunger Games:Catching Fire’), Damon Herriman (‘Quarry’), Ewen Leslie (‘The Mule’), Charlie Shotwell (‘All the Money in the World’), Harry Greenwood (‘Hacksaw Ridge’), Magnolia Maymuru and Bayakali Ganambarr.

The film festival faced criticism when Jennifer Kent was named as the only female director selected for competition at La Biennale Di Venezia this year.

Speaking about her status at the festival, Writer/Director Jennifer Kent told Variety:

“(My position) brings me no joy. It’s not about me, but it is quite hard for me because I wish I had my sister filmmakers here. It’s important we move towards gender-parity. Cinema’s job is to reflect the world and if we only reflect 50% of the world, then it’s not doing its job. It’s a very serious issue.”

Written and directed by Jennifer Kent (‘The Babadook’), the dark thriller makes its world premiere at the 75th Venice Film Festival on Friday, September 7th.
