BBC Announce Special Screening Celebrating the Career of Kenneth Branagh
19 Jan 2018 : Nathan Griffin
BBC Northern Ireland has announced that they will host a special screening as part of Branagh's Freedom of the City celebrations. This follows the announcement late last year that Kenneth Branagh would become the 82nd person to receive the Freedom of Belfast award.

BBC NI has chosen a vintage sample of Branagh’s early work, selecting the acclaimed 1987 drama ‘Fortunes of War’. Based on Olivia Manning’s novels, ‘Fortunes of War’ follows the life and relationship of Guy and Harriet Pringle, who are caught in the midst of war-torn Europe. Branagh stars alongside a young Emma Thompson in what was one of the highest budget series’ commissioned by the BBC at the time (£6.5 million).

The screening will also feature some special guests including Professor Eve Patten who will open the screening with a short introduction about the origins of the story. The screening will be followed by a discussion with Patten and William Crawley where they will explore some of the themes that featured in the ‘Fortunes of War’ series along with Olivia Manning career and her links to Northern Ireland.

The BBC will also be putting together a BBC Archive showreel highlighting some of Kenneth Branagh’s best interviews and roles.

The screening takes place at Blackstaff Studio in Belfast at 6:45pm – January 29th.

Speaking about the Freedom of Belfast honour, Branagh said:

"I thank Belfast City Council for their generosity, and please know that I will continue to shout aloud to the world at large about the many amazing developments happening in the place I am proud to call home."

"I'm proud to say that you can take the boy out of Belfast, but you can't take Belfast out of the boy,"

Lord Mayor of Belfast Nuala McAllister added:

"As someone who has reached the very pinnacle of his career in acting and film, he has never forgotten his Belfast roots and is a fantastic ambassador for the city,"

Other highlights for what is being pegged the ‘Branagh in Belfast’ festival include a unique opportunity to watch Dunkirk on board the HMS Caroline, along with a screening of Cinderella in Belfast Castle, in which attending guests are encouraged to dress up as their favourite princess.

The official Freedom of Belfast ceremony will take place at Ulster Hall on Tuesday, January 30th.
