A Day in the Life of an Account Manager - Alison Crosbie of Spotlight Ireland
13 Jun 2017 : Katie McNeice
Our latest interview series connecting the knowledge and advice of leading industry professionals with newcomers to film and television continues with another look at the logistics of casting.

We’ve already heard from Claire McGinley at Spotlight on keeping an eye on emerging talent and the importance of understanding a director’s creative vision when preparing actors for auditions and filming.

Now Alison Crosbie talks us through her role, which takes her from hectic Spotlight Ireland events, to continuous training and development for members and working with Casting Directors.

IFTN: In 1-2 sentences, what are your primary responsibilities as a Spotlight Ireland Account Manager?
“In my role I lead Spotlight membership events, career advice clinics, camera clinics in the Spotlight Ireland Studio, Spotlight graduate open house events, and all Spotlight Ireland open house events.

“Spotlight 'The Home of Casting’ celebrates 90 Years of Casting, connecting Spotlight Members to Casting Directors at home and Internationally. Hosting educational and industry events and workshops to progress our members Acting Careers.”

IFTN: Talk me through your training background and what key skills you need to work in this role?
“Spotlight offers a platform for my ‘jack of all trades’ skill set and training background which includes a Script Writing MA at IADT and experience as a Director PA, Casting Assistant & Director (UK & Ireland) and NightClub Manager, each of which inform my passion for the craft and world of Actors.

“Together they help with interpreting and developing scripts, plot and character, and transcending into the magical space of performance and character to create the characters in stories through performance. Spotlight allows me to pull on all the aspects of my professional industry career to liaise with Spotlight Members, Industry Agents and Casting Directors, Producers and Directors.”

IFTN: How does this role differ from other roles in casting such as casting director or agent for instance?
“My role within Spotlight differs from a Casting Director and Agent, as it offers a more neutral relationship with actors, creating an understanding of industry 'best practice' in creating an actor’s Spotlight profile page, presenting head shots, showreel, voice reel and self tapes along with credits and training credits.”

IFTN: What kinds of projects do you work on or can it change from one to the next?
I am involved in everything from Spotlight’s support of festivals, open house weeks, industry Q&As and one-on-one actor’s career advice sessions to in-studio workshops for Spotlight Members. As well as that I can change over to working with professionals within the industry, particularly with Casting Directors, assisting in the process of casting via Spotlight casting breakdowns.

IFTN: What tips would you give young IFTN readers who are training at the moment or other professionals looking to branch into your area?
“If you dig what you do, it never feels like work! I think that is the trick mostly for me anyways!”
