Irish talent and LGBT rights activist Rory O’Neill, otherwise known as drag queen Panti Bliss, originally penned the memoir in 2014, detailing the work and life which brought Panti to the forefront of the Yes Equality campaign and to many related issues since.
Production company Playground is based in both New York and London. Rory will star as Panti Bliss in the new project, which is set to be filmed in Dublin.
O’Neill’s life and work was previously the subject of documentary ‘Queen of Ireland.’ (Conor Horgan) which won top prizes of Best Irish Film and Best Documentary at the Dublin Film Critics Circle Awards in 2015.
Playground CEO Colin Callender:
“Rory is a genuinely unique voice, and we’re excited to be working with his alter-ego Panti Bliss on a series that will bring her provocative perspective on contemporary culture and the unspoken challenges that face the gay community to a mainstream television audience…Watching his TED talk and his remarkable speech at the Abbey Theatre, I was utterly captivated by Rory’s ability to use the persona of Panti Bliss to talk about issues of homophobia, acceptance and tolerance in a bold, funny and very personal way that challenges all our easy preconceptions.”
