Northern Irish shot ‘Game of Thrones’ officially renewed for seventh season ahead of season six premiere this weekend

As the world prepares itself for Northern Irish shot series ‘Game of Thrones’ to air its’ sixth season this weekend, HBO has announced that they have officially renewed the juggernaut series for a seventh season.

The renewal comes after months of negotiations with the size of the order not yet revealed. It is rumoured however that there will be less episodes than the previous seasons with creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss stating that the seventh season will not have the adhere to the standard 10 episode order. They also stated that they wanted the eighth season to be the show’s last.

Season six will air on HBO in the US from 9pm (EST) this Sunday, 24th April and Sky Atlantic in the UK & Ireland will premiere the first episode at the exact same time, 2am (GMT) on 25th April and in its usual 9pm Monday night slot.

Production of season six injected an estimated £22 million into the Northern Ireland economy – bringing the total amount across seasons one to six to an estimated £137 million with an investment of £13.75m from Northern Ireland Screen.

‘Game of Thrones’ is an original series based on George R.R. Martin's best-selling 'A Song of Ice and Fire' series. It films on location across Northern Ireland and in Titanic Studios in Belfast and the Linen Mill Film Studios in Banbridge. The show receives funding from Northern Ireland Screen supported by Invest NI and features Irish actors Liam Cunningham, Aidan Gillen and Conleth Hill.

The show broke the record at the Primetime Emmy Awards last year by picking up 12 awards including Best Drama and there were also wins for Production Mixer Ronan Hill for Outstanding Sound Mixing (his second win) and Casting Director Carla Stronge for Outstanding Casting. The series was also nominated for Best Drama at this year’s Golden Globe and IFTA Awards, with Liam Cunningham also garnering an IFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Returning members of the ensemble cast for the sixth season include Emmy and Golden Globe winner Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Natalie Dormer, Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner. The sixth season sees new cast members including the Golden Globe winning Ian McShane. Executive producers are David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, Carolyn Strauss, Frank Doelger and Bernadette Caulfield while co-executive producers are Guymon Casady, Vince Gerardis and George R.R. Martin.
