Abbolita Films has acquired multi-territory rights to Brendan Muldowney’s ‘Pilgrimage’, Yann Demange’s ‘71’ and Gerard Barrett’s new feature ‘Brain On Fire’.

The three films are already XYZ titles with Abbolita and XYZ launching an alliance earlier this year that sees Abbolita acquiring the distribution rights for Turkey, Portugal, Greece, Israel, South Africa, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, Hong Kong and the Philippines, according to Variety.

Set in 13th century Ireland, ‘Pilgrimage’ follows a small group of monks as they undertake a treacherous pilgrimage to escort their monastery’s holiest relic to Rome. But, as the true material, political and religious significance of the relic is revealed; the group’s journey becomes increasingly fraught with danger. Ultimately, the faith that binds the men together threatens to be the very same thing that will tear them apart.

Directed by Brendan Muldowney and written by Jamie Hannigan, the film is produced by Conor Barry and John Keville of Savage Productions and Benoit Roland of Wrong Men North – with support from the Irish Film Board. The feature shot earlier this summer in the West of Ireland as well as the Ardennes region of Belgium.

Starring Jon Bernthal, Richard Armitage, and Tom Holland, key crew includes DoP Tom Comerford, editor Mairead McIvor, Production Designer Owen Power and composer Stephen McKeon.

Gerard Barrett’s first US feature ‘Brain On Fire’ is based on Susannah Cahalan’s bestselling memoir Brain On Fire: My Month Of Madness and follows a young woman who mysteriously starts having seizures and hearing voices. As weeks go by and she rapidly descends into insanity, she moves inexplicably from violence to catatonia. Following a series of outbursts, misdiagnoses and a prolonged hospital stay, a lucky last-minute intervention by one doctor finally gives her a diagnosis and hope to rebuild her life.

Barrett adapted the screenplay and will also direct and co-produce. Dakota Fanning was initially cast to play the lead but was recently replaced by Chloe Grace Moretz due to scheduling conflicts. Other actors cast include Thomas Mann and Jenny Slate.

‘Brain On Fire’ will be produced by Charlize Theron, Beth Kono, and A.J. Dix for Denver & Delilah Films and Rob Merilees and Lindsay Macadam for Foundation Features.

Yann Demange’s ‘71’ is set in Belfast during the troubles and features a host of Irish actors including Barry Keoghan, Charlie Murphy, Richard Dormer, David Wilmot, Killian Scott, Corey McGinley and Martin McCann.

The film sees Jack O’ Connell (‘Starred Up’, ‘Unbroken’) play a young British soldier who gets separated and accidentally left behind by his unit during a riot in Belfast in 1971.

Written by Gregory Burke, the film is produced by Angus Lamont and Robin Gutch. Backers include Film4, BFI Film Fund, Screen Yorkshire, and Creative Scotland, with development support from Northern Ireland Screen, Film4, BFI and Creative Scotland.
