Three Irish films have been selected to screen at the world renowned Toronto International Film Festival this year, which is due to run from September 10 to 20.

Lenny Abrahamson’s ‘Room’, John Crowley’s ‘Brooklyn’ and Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘The Lobster’ were all selected in the first wave of announcements from the Toronto Fest committee this year.

Produced by Element Pictures and No Trace Camping with funding from the Irish Film Board, ‘Room’ is told through the eyes of a five year old who is held captive in a room along with his mother. The film stars Brie Larson, William H. Macy and Jacob Tremblay. Earlier this year, Filmnation Entertainment sold out all international rights to the film which as of yet has not screened anywhere.

‘Room’ is directed by Lenny Abrahamson with Emma Donoghue adapting the screenplay from her own award-winning novel. The film was post-produced at Screen Scene in Dublin. The creative team includes Abrahamson’s regular collaborators, editor Nathan Nugent (‘Frank’) and composer Stephen Rennicks (also ‘Frank’). Element Pictures’ Ed Guiney (‘The Lobster’, ‘Frank’, ‘What Richard Did’) produced ‘Room’ with David Gross (‘What If’, ‘Goon’). Executive producers are Andrew Lowe (‘The Lobster’, ‘Frank’, ‘The Wind that Shakes the Barley’) for Element Pictures and Jeff Arkuss (‘What If’) and Jesse Shapira (‘What If’, ‘Goon’) for No Trace Camping.

‘Brooklyn’ screened at Sundance earlier this year and was acquired by Fox Searchlight for $9m, the second biggest deal of the festival in 2015. The film has also received highly positive reviews from US publications such as Variety, The Los Angeles Times, The Hollywood Reporter and the New York Post.

‘Brooklyn’ is an Irish/British co-production from Wildgaze Films, Finola Dwyer Productions, Parallel Films and Item 7. ‘Brooklyn’ was co-financed by the Irish Film Board and filmed on location in Wexford, Dublin and Wicklow, as well as Montreal and New York.

Directed by IFTA and BAFTA winning director John Crowley (‘Intermission’, ‘Boy A’) and adapted by Nick Hornby from Colm Tóibin’s novel of the same name, ‘Brooklyn’ stars Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan as a young Irish immigrant in 1950’s New York whose blossoming relationship with an Italian plumber Tony (Emory Cohen),is threatened when tragedy calls her home. She returns to Ireland where her attraction for a charming local man called Jim (Domhnall Gleeson), grows.

Lionsgate UK will release ‘Brooklyn’ in cinemas in Ireland on 6 November and across the UK on 27 November. It will be released to US cinemas by Fox Searchlight also on 6 November.

A surreal, romantic drama and winner of the Jury Prize at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, ‘The Lobster’ stars Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz with a supporting cast including Léa Seydoux, Ben Whishaw, John C.Reilly, Olivia Colman and Ashley Jensen.

The film is the English language debut of Greek director Lanthimos, who first came to international prominence with debut feature ‘Dogtooth’, winner of the Un Certain Regard Prize in Cannes and nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2011 Academy Awards.

Shot at Parknasilla in Co. Kerry in Spring 2014, ‘The Lobster’ is written by Yorgos Lanthimos and Efthimis Filippou and produced by Ed Guiney, Lee Magiday, Ceci Dempsey and Yorgos Lanthimos. Executive Producers are Andrew Lowe, Tessa Ross and Sam Lavender with Isabel Davis as the lead executive for the BFI Film Fund. The film was developed by Element and Irish finance for the film came from the Irish Film Board with Rory Gilmartin as the lead executive for the IFB.

Also of Irish interest at Toronto this year are the screenings of ‘Louder Than Bombs’ starring Gabriel Byrne, ‘Stonewall’ starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers and ‘The Program’ starring Chris O’Dowd.

The Toronto International Film Festival will take place from September 10 to 20.
