Oscar nominated and BAFTA-winning producer Brian J. Falconer chosen for UK mentoring scheme Guiding Lights

Brian J. Falconer is one of 15 industry professionals chosen this year
Producer Brian J. Falconer has been announced as one of the 15 candidates selected for this year’s Guiding Lights, a UK mentoring scheme that picks out rising talent within the industry and aims to take their career to the next level.

More than 250 candidates applied for the sought after places on the scheme. Now in its seventh edition, Guiding Lights aims to equip participants with the skills and contacts they need to take their careers to the next level, through nine months of one-to-one mentor support from an established film professional, along with invitations to industry training and networking events. It has a reputation for being one of Europe’s most renowned mentoring schemes.

Producer Brian J. Falconer has garnered much attention over the past 12 months, with short film ‘Boogaloo and Graham’ landing him Oscar and IFTA nominations as well as a BAFTA Award.

The producer is also currently at the Galway Film Fleadh where he has two shorts screening this year – the thriller ‘Insulin’ directed by Andy and Ryan Tohill and written by Stephen Fingleton - and ‘Awaydays’ which is also written by Fingleton and reunites him with ‘Boogaloo and Graham’ director Michael Lennox who was last month invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS). Falconer is one of only two producers to have two short films screening at the Fleadh this year (the other being Collie McCarthy).

Speaking to IFTN about the Guiding Lights selection, Falconer said: "I am absolutely delighted! Guiding Lights is Europe's most prestigious film mentoring scheme and I am really excited at the prospect of being mentored by a top producer whom I greatly admire. GLs has come at exactly the right time for me in my career as I move into feature film production and I know that I will have to maximise this invaluable opportunity as it only comes round once. Looking at the other mentees selected, I feel like I am part of a very special group and its going to be great to work and learn with them though out the year."

The Northern Irish producer is also currently in early development of four feature films, one of which is entitled ‘Normal People’.

Mentors for the 2015 year have not yet been announced. Past mentors include Danny Boyle, Kenneth Branagh, Abi Morgan, Hossein Amini, Barbara Broccili, Sam Mendes, John Madded, Asif Kapadia, Christopher Hampton, Tim Bevan, Alinson Owen, and James Marsh, among others.

Previous mentees include Laura Hastings-Smith, producer of Steve McQueen’s ‘Hunger’, 2013 BAFTA Best Debut-nominee Tina Gharavi (I Am Nasrine), Sundance and Berlin 2013 selected filmmaker Andy Heathcote (The Moo Man), and writer/director Rebecca Johnson (‘Honeytrap’).
