Irish actor Moe Dunford – who has recently garnered acclaim for his portrayal of a mentally-ill young man in Terry McMahon’s award-winning ‘Patrick’s Day’ - has received a European Film Promotion (EFP) Shooting Star Award at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival.

The award was presented to Dunford by Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman with the Waterford actor being one of only ten European actors to receive the accolade this year. Now in its’ 18th year the annual talent platform seeks out the most talented young European actors who they believe will become important stars in the future.

Past winners include current James Bond star Daniel Craig, Oscar nominated actress Carey Mulligan and Irish actors Domhnall Gleeson, Ruth Negga and Andrew Scott – with UK actress Maisie Williams (‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Gold’) also receiving a Shooting Star this year.

The jury, which consists of actress Eva Röse (‘Maria Wern’), UK film magazine editor Damon Wise (Empire magazine), Polish film director Malgorzata Szumowska (‘Elles’), Slovenian film producer Danijel Hočevar (‘Circles’) and French casting director Nathalie Cheron (‘Lucy’), had this to say about why Moe Dunford received the award:

‘Moe's physicality and sly charm first drew us to him – the ingredients of a modern-day Hollywood hero – but his work in ‘Patrick's Day’ sealed the deal. As schizophrenic Patrick, he shows compassion and subtlety always putting the character first, never letting Patrick's issues overwhelm the performance.’

Speaking about receiving the award, Moe said: 'I am immensely honoured to receive such a prestigious award. I am very passionate about and proud of 'Patrick’s Day' which I know has played no small part in winning me this accolade. I have been blown away by the positive response the film has been getting and how it’s really resonating with audiences. I want to especially thank Terry McMahon, the writer and director of the film, for taking a chance on me as a young actor and giving me one of the most rewarding acting experiences of my life.'

Dunford is a graduate of the Gaiety School of Acting and has worked extensively on stage and television, including 'Game of Thrones', 'The Tudors', and a recurring role on the Irish-Canadian co-production 'Vikings', but his part in Patrick's Day represents his first starring film role.'

‘Patrick’s Day’ is in cinemas now. Read IFTN’s interview with Moe Dunford here.
