IFTA Winning ‘Calvary’ Hits Cinemas Friday
10 Apr 2014 : Aisling Newton
Hailed as the most significant Irish film in years, John Michael McDonagh’s ‘Calvary’ has achieved high recognition at home and abroad ahead of its release in Irish cinemas this Friday, April 11.

At last weekend’s IFTA ceremony ‘Calvary’ took home the highest accolade for Best Film along with Best Actor for Brendan Gleeson and Best Script for its writer-director McDonagh. Gleeson and McDonagh previously collaborated on the 2011 black comedy ‘The Guard’. ‘Calvary’ features a fantastic line-up of Irish actors including Chris O'Dowd (Bridesmaids), Aidan Gillen (The Dark Knight Rises), Dylan Moran (Notting Hill), Domhnall Gleeson (About Time), David Wilmot (King Arthur), Pat Shortt (The Guard), Gary Lydon (War Horse) and Killian Scott (Black Ice).

Set in a small-town in Sligo, the film features Father James Lavelle (Brendan Gleeson), who, after receiving a death threat in the confession box, is warned that his time is almost up. Making up the vast array of characters includes a stinking rich local tycoon (Dylan Moran), a butcher with a sharp tongue suspected of beating his wife (Chris O’Dowd), the latter’s wildly promiscuous wife (Orla O’Rourke) and a cynical doctor who’s seen too much death (Aidan Gillen).

'Calvary' is an Octagon Films and Reprisal Films production, produced with funding from the Irish Film Board (IFB) and the BFI in association with LipSync Productions. International sales are being handled by Protagonist Pictures. Fox Searchlight Pictures recently acquired U.S. rights as well as select international territories to the blackly comedic film after it enjoyed a string of success at its world premiere in Sundance.

‘Calvary’ has been receiving rave reviews from audiences around the world. Empire Magazine gave the film five stars and said: “On the strength of only two films, McDonagh and Gleeson are a director/star team on a par with Ford/Wayne, or Scorsese/De Niro. ‘Calvary’ is gripping, moving, funny and troubling.” A film about guilt and the assignment of blame, ‘Calvary’ is shot in and around Sligo and north county Dublin, the scenery is bright and beautiful and seems a perfect contrast to the subject matter of humour and honesty with an aggressive undertone.

James Flynn, Chris Clark and Flora Fernandez-Marengo are producers on the film with Larry Smith acting as cinematographer. The film was edited by Chris Gill, cast by Jina Jay, ans scored by Patrick Cassidy. Costume design was done by Eimer Ni Mhaoldomhnaigh and production design by Mark Geraghty.

‘Calvary’ is set for relase by E1 in Irish cinemas this Friday, April 11. Check out the trailer below:
