George Entwistle named next BBC director general… George Entwistle has landed one of the most powerful positions in broadcasting after being named the new director general of the BBC. Entwistle, who is currently director of BBC Vision, will take over from outgoing director general Mark Thompson on September 17. Announcing the appointment, BBC Trust Chairman Lord Patten said: “George is a creative leader for a creative organisation.”
Eric Sykes dies aged 89… Eric Sykes, one of the UK’S finest comedy actors and writers, and a star of post-war radio, TV and film for more than 60 years, has died aged 89 after a short illness, reports The Guardian. Sykes was best-known for seven series of the 1970s sitcom ‘Sykes’. He also appeared in films such as ‘Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire’ and, in 2007, the low-budget British comedy ‘Son of Rambow.’
