Daily Bite: Britain Launches Consultation Process for TV Tax Breaks
19 Jun 2012 : By Steve Cummins
In today’s Daily Bite, the British government formerly invites comments over its proposed tax incentives for TV productions; Sony announces plans to expand its 3D coverage at Wimbledon; and Miramax links up with BSkyB.

British government launches consultation process for TV tax breaksThe British government has opened its consultation on a proposed tax break programme for big budget TV productions, such as ‘Downton Abbey’, animation projects and video games. British industry representatives and others have now been invited to comment on the proposal, which was first outlined in the British budget earlier this year. They have until September to voice their comments. Britain hopes to bring the tax incentives into effect by next April. They hope the planned tax relief move will halt a recent exodus of drama-making from the UK.

Sony to expand 3D technology to Wimbledon Sony has announced plans to expand the 3D production and broadcast coverage at Wimbledon next month with five days of 3D coverage beginning July 4. Five broadcasters, BBC, Canal+ (Spain), ESPN, Nova (Greece) and Sky Italia have confirmed plans to broadcast the live 3D feed to viewers across the globe. Following Sony's award-winning 2011 3D Wimbledon production, this year sees the 3D production moving to a fully tapeless operation, based around the company's HDCAM SR Master technology. For the first time at a major sporting event, the Wimbledon production crew will use the SR-R1 HDCAM SR recorders combined with PMW-TD300 camcorders to record interviews and onsite content, whilst capturing the action in high picture quality.

Miramax signs deal with BSkyB Hollywood studio Miramax has signed an exclusive licensing deal with BSkyB, which will see a number of its movies available exclusively on the TV service in Britain and Ireland. Under the agreement, Sky will hold exclusive rights to films including ‘Life Is Beautiful’ and ‘Captain Corelli's Mandolin.’

If you watch one trailer today… As expectation gears up ahead of the release of ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ this December, here’s a behind-the-scenes look at the production with director Peter Jackson and featuring Irish actor Aidan Turner (The Clinic).
