Daily Bite: Cannes 2012 Gets Underway

Diane Kruger on the red carpet in Cannes
In today’s Daily Bite, Wes Anderson's ‘Moonrise Kingdom’ opens the Cannes Film Festival as ITV tweak ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?’

Cannes gets underway…. The 65th Cannes Film Festival got underway yesterday (May 16) with director Wes Anderson's ‘Moonrise Kingdom,’ attended by its cast of Tilda Swinton, Bruce Willis, Edward Norton and Bill Murray. Meanwhile, The Guardian is reporting that British director and Cannes jury member Andrea Arnold (Fish Tank) has dismissed the sexism row surrounding the festival. A group of French feminists and film-makers had complained to organisers that all 22 films in competition for this year's Palme d'Or were made by men.

ITV tweak ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?’ format…. Broadcast are reporting that ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?’ is to be resurrected with a slightly tweaked format. The show’s ‘Ask the Audience’ lifeline will become ‘Ask the Nation’ as part of a ground-breaking playalong game for the ITV1 quiz. In a major new step forward for ITV’s digital strategy, users will answer the same questions as contestants live on air. They will also compete with other players online in a live leader board, where points are awarded based on the speed of their answers. Social media elements on Twitter and Facebook will allow viewers to interact while playing. ITV has commissioned three live episodes of the big money gameshow.

UKTV strikes deal with Channel 4 UK multichannel operator UKTV has struck a deal that will see it broadcast 350 hours of Channel 4’s factual and lifestyle programming, taking the place of Discovery Communications. From the third quarter of 2012, Channel 4 shows from 16 UK indies will begin broadcasting on UKTV, which operates a mixture of 10 free- and pay-TV channels.

Warner Bros. Pictures hits $1bn at international box office in record time…. Following the strong opening of director Tim Burton’s ‘Dark Shadows,’ Warner Bros. Pictures has surpassed the $1bn mark in overseas box office in less than five months. The studio has beaten its own 2010 record by ten days. This marks the twelfth consecutive year Warner Bros. has grossed over $1bn overseas, beginning in 2001. The studio also has further big releases to come this year, including Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises.’

If you watch one trailer today…. Released in cinemas tomorrow, ‘A Kiss For Jed’ stars Mark O’Halloran.
