Moore Presents Three Northern Ireland Docos
11 Sep 2007 :
NESTA (the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts) fellow Carol Moore will host a film showcase of her work entitled ‘Creating a Culture of Visibility-How Can the Arts Speak for Minority Communities?’ in Belfast Metropolitan College, Belfast on Thursday 13th September at 7.15pm.

The screening, introduced by Anna Lo, MLA, will feature three films produced and directed by Moore: ‘Are You Seeing Me?’, ‘This Belfast Thing’ and ‘The Farther, The Dearer’, all exploring issues of cultural diversity in Northern Ireland.

Moore’s first documentary, ‘Are you seeing me?’, offers footage of political murals, attempting to reinforce a sense of distinctiveness that is Belfast; her second, ‘This Belfast Thing’, offers a montage of visual and sound ethnicity associations, providing nuances of people, place and identity; and finally ‘The Farther, the Dearer’ is a 50 minute documentary about Aleksej Fedjukovs, a migrant worker from the village of Seda, Latvia, now working in Belfast. The film received funding from Northern Ireland Screen, the Community Relations Council, the Northern Ireland Equity Committee and private donors.

Following the screenings, theatre director and lecturer Dr Dominic Hingorani will chair a panel discussion with The Red Room film and theatre company director Topher Campbell, filmmaker and digital media artist Kuljit Singh Chuhan (Virtual Migrants), ArtsEkta development officer Nisha Tandon, Derry writer and broadcaster Eddie Kerr and Carol Moore. These artists will share their methodologies and examples of work to illustrate how Arts practice can engage with minority communities.

The NESTA Fellowship Programme was founded in 1998 to uncover and assist UK talent that was at risk of going unnoticed, unsupported, struggling, taking longer than necessary to develop or was in danger of going overseas. Over 200 NESTA Fellowships were awarded between 1998 and 2006.

“Creating a Culture of Visibility – How Can the Arts Speak for Minority Communities?“ takes place at Belfast Metropolitan College, Tower Street Campus, Tower Street Theatre, Newtownards Road, Belfast on Thursday 13th September at 7.15pm.
